I have to say I don’t follow any outlet anymore so I can’t say you’re wrong, but I do sometimes see Eurogamer having interesting features about old games and less hyperbolic review scores (review score inflation is real)

    Also DIGITAL FOUNDRY

Also Gameindustry.biz - which is part of this bundle - fills a certain niche better than others I guess

    WHAT

I don’t even know, what were the e3 showcase equivalents this year for Sony and Microsoft?

    DF is independent.

Oh interesting, so this whole Eurogamer thing is just a promotional deal I assume?

they publish their written work on EG, but yeah, remember with Starfield how DF got review codes but EG didn't? So they have some sort of symbiotic relationship but it's surface level. Plus, who reads DF articles, right?

In regards to why people are upset: independent in terms of video games to a lot of people is a smaller studio without the capital and backing of a larger entity. So in that case, Dave the Diver is not eligible. A really good example is 3 years ago Ori was nominated but excluded because it had the backing of Microsoft.

Geoff’s response is lazy and just further proves his bias. Out of all the people that knew or didn’t know Dave the Diver was backed by a large company, Geoff knew. He is such a joke.

Geoff/Game Awards aside, I think the problem here is the meaning of “large company”, because plenty of games that people agree are proper indie games work with publishers that aren’t tiny, but also aren’t perceived as “major publishers” (but like I said, where is the line?).

But yeah, neither Dave nor Ori belong.

Nexon is one of the biggest video game publishers up there along with Tencent so there is no confusion.

In general though the term is a little vague

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like Geoff ultimately isn't responsible for the nominees though, so all he's trying to do is posit a reason why it would've been included. And he's not wrong, clearly people look at the word "independent" from multiple perspectives.

Take music for example: what is indie music anyway? I mean, indie rock became its own genre with a style, so clearly it's not just about not having a major label, or doesn't have to be. I'd argue games are the same way.

I think ragging on Geoff is really putting focus on blaming the wrong party. I mean, if I were in Geoff's shoes and I were hosting this thing and the jury chose this game for a category, would I, regardless of my own feelings, put out an answer that undermines their decision or would I try to be fair and unbiased?

They should have guidelines and Geoff shouldn't have to publicly speculate about the reasons behind their nonsense. Tl;dr: it's a stupid event/organisation.

I pretty much summed up why people are mad and putting a clear AAA game in the category makes another game that should get nominated lose out on a spot.

Also, it’s Geoff’s show no? So wouldn’t it ultimately be his decision to include or not include a game? Instead issuing something a politician would say aka ignoring the issue.

Either way, the Game Awards suck and we are really just tuning in for the premieres and trailers.

And to see how security royally fucks up again even though Geoff says security is increased this year.

    Indie isn’t a fucking aesthetic.
Sickening that Dave the diver is nominated.

DtD isn’t AAA though. AAA is not the opposite of indie. At one point we would have called this downloadable game or something haha

To the first part, I totally get it, don't get me wrong. I'm not arguing that it's right, I'm just saying I can understand why people would do it.

To the second part, he's the producer, yes, and Moose is right that there should be clear guidelines, but I think focusing on Geoff is ignoring the fact that over a hundred parties on the jury were polled and the majority decided Dave The Diver should be on the list.

There's clearly a larger issue going on here. Honestly gives me real "rock bands don't get inducted in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame" vibes.

I was exaggerating that they are triple A but it still doesn’t excuse the fact they are back by a major company. The aesthetic may be indie but the budget is far from it.

I feel like I know the answer to this, but if Mintrocket wasn't owned by Nexon, but still had the game published by them, would that change the situation?

  25. Fucking Dustin

So tell me something awesome Supporter

The difference IMO is that with the R&RHOF, a hip hop artist getting in doesn't mean no rock bands get in, but if DtD wins that award then no indie games win essentially

But I get what you're saying still and I agree there's a lot of directions to point fingers in how it's treated

    Back to my cave now
