Just found out about this game because CDPR posted about its release on Twitter. Looks pretty awesome to me at least. It’s out on steam today but I’m unfortunately not a PC player, so hopefully it’ll get a console port

Anybody have any Balatro tips? I’m 20 hours in and still haven’t won. I love these games but I’m no good at them, apparently; I’ve played dozens of hours of Slay the Spire as well and have never beat a run.

Even when I’m having an amazing run, I plateau around the fifth ante and immediately get wrecked. I’ve been trying to mostly focus on planet cards and jokers with multipliers.

I won my first game recently and I won by taking advantage of spectral cards. Their ability to destroy cards you may not want and also create a surplus of cards in a certain rank ends up paying off bigtime and really helps guide you in deciding which direction you wanna build in. The run I won I got a Ouija card that turned my hand into all aces and I just ran 3-5 of a kind the entire game to take advantage of that, with jokers that focus on those hand multipliers and also jokers that focus on aces specifically

In my first games I focused hard on planet cards and multipliers and while they do help a TON and are essential, they do the most when you're already manipulating the deck itself

I know it sounds "obvious" but make sure you're getting jokers that synergise well with each other too; multipliers are great, but you need base mult to multiply for it to really matter. I also think if you're running economy jokers you should probably be looking to dump them around the time you usually lose, or when you hit $100, whichever comes first.

Definitely don't sleep on manipulating your deck to try and get as many of one suit as possible (flush builds) or as many of one card as you (4/5 of a kind) or even trying to remove anything except chunks of the deck (for straights). Planets are great and useful, but if you level a bunch of hands, you end up with a ton of hand types that are strongER, but not Strong. I think letting Ante 1 or maybe 2 help define your run (especially through Spectrals like Dustin says) and then trying to maximize whatever build you end up with is the way I usually get wins.

But I think the biggest tip that even I sometimes forget or neglect are card modifiers; steel/glass cards can help your score go insane, and red seals, especially if you can get them on a glass card or a rarity (foil/poly/holo) card can really go crazy and almost carry your runs.

I find once you get your first or second win, things just click and you can start knocking wins out fairly comfortably. Don't be afraid to try different decks too, maybe you would benefit more from +1 Discard instead of +1 Hand, or something like that.

get tarot cards that change 3 cards to a suit and then get the joker of that suit that adds +4 mult and then start going for flushes. Also planet cards to level up your most commonly played hands. On my winning run I believe I had full house up to level 5 and flush up to 4. Don’t be afraid to use all your hands or draws to go for big winners. and try to level up two pair early on. but the biggest thing for me was having the perfect combination of jokers to hit huge multipliers. get the joker that give you +3 mult when you skip a booster and then skip every single booster. I had that one up to +36 mult by the end. if a joker doesn’t give +mult don’t bother with it.

yeah general deck manipulation can go a long way and using spectral cards to get your aces and kings and queens of the suit you’re building upgraded can be huge. for me the biggest run enders are the needle boss and the one that only lets you play one hand type. the needle can be brutal if you get a bad draw there’s literally nothing you can do so that’s why deck manipulation becomes important. and making sure you’ve got the multipliers necessary to juice a single hand to the score you need because if you get the needle boss late in the run it’s even more brutal trying to get 50k or more on a single hand

There's a uncommon joker called Burned or something like that which lets you level up the first hand you discard every round, that guy is sick when you unlock him.

Planet cards can be solid but I don't think they scale strong enough for the late antes, so I tend to pickup arcana packs whenever possible and bank on getting double planet arcanas or bundles

One run I got a joker with the negative power which basically let me have 6 jokers and I got the joker that gives you +3 mult for each joker and it counted toward that

oh yeah that burned one was good I got it once. There’s also one that turns every card in your played hand gold that I ran for a while til half my deck was gold. Good way to get money

also found the joker that gives you x2 mult and goes down with every discard to be extremely helpful in juicing your overall multiplier especially because I had it in the middle of my jokers so it would multiply by 2 after already getting some added to it

^Speaking of that, I see a lot of people not realizing you can re-arrange the order of the jokers. You always want + mult and chips jokers towards the left, and X jokers to the right. The math always works out better this way.

Thank you all! This is all super helpful. When it came to planet cards, I was trying to level up all my hands evenly which I now see is obvious makes no sense.

I didn’t know you could rearrange it yourself I just knew the one boss that puts them all face down and mixes them up so I just assumed it was locked

Ramen is definitely a good early game joker when you don't quite have a build yet, I used it long enough once to actually "eat" it lol.

I think my favorite jokers I always grab are Baseball (1.5x multi for each uncommon joker you have),the X multiplier for each empty joker slot and the one that multiplies your final hand of a round by 3.

I'll specifically do bad hands with that last one so I have a Uber powerful final hand (and that's how I finally got a million chip round)

My big misunderstanding at first was not knowing you could rearrange jokers AND your played hand, which is useful for cards that activate certain joker effects and the tarot card that lets you copy cards (even though my dumbass missed it saying exactly that in the text lol)

yeah def focus on 2-3 hand types (I like straight, flush, and full house) to level up as much as you can and draw for those when you’re 3/5 of the way there no matter what. But again I also like to level two pair up a bit at the beginning since I hit those a lot when drawing for a full house and it’s better to get something out of it than feeling like a wasted hand
