Yeah, but Sony and Microsoft are on different levels and their views/handling of the video game departments are wildly different.

Nobody is saying any multi-national corporation is our friend. We’re talking about the video game industry specifically here lol

...while also dropping the BC and CD-reading features and making subscriptions for online play mandatory lol. And lots of sony fans at the time were like "dur, who needs more games, I'll just keep my older consoles lololo", acting like more games and free online multiplayer wasn't better. And Microsoft's approach to BC last gen for sure helped wake Sony up to the benefits of bringing the feature back. One of many examples.

So I get it, though like most who see through it I'm ready for the endless pissing matches to end in favor of more consumer friendly practices being standardized across the board.

I guess I'll get my shot at those games via smart TV one day. tbf to sony, they're making similar moves as well (porting lots of titles over to PC, PSnow etc). Maybe each company will compete themselves into the most consumer-friendly practices imaginable. Of course this depends largely on consumer wants in general, which any sensible person should remain skeptical and critical of.

Sony is downright being stupid right now.

Sony is behaving like the dominant company in an oligopoly. It’s all pretty predictable.

Their business practices have been trash for both consumer and industry alike for some time, but the game selection is just too damn good. Every platform should have such a game library.

silver lining with the Msoft stuff is that the games will be accessible on PC too. I do hate exclusivity bids though.

unless until the game pass service gets out of control or they do something else with drm or services.

if things get too out of control theres always piracy on pc.

Sony does bad/stupid things but they're also never going to be in a position to make a monopolization play because they don't have the money for it. Neither does Nintendo. Microsoft does, though. That's why we should all not be taking too kindly to their attempts at consolidating as much content as possible under their sole control. It's not like they're just entering into deals to have games launch on Game Pass day one, they're trying to lock down the content so they get to decide how and where we play the content.

Everyone, for YEARS, has said "Microsoft has no good first party titles". So many complaints and jabs that Sony was better because MS had none or that Sony's were better. Now they do and they still complain. Fuck right off.

Also, you realize how many video game studios exist? This is hardly a monopoly.

There aren’t enough independent (as in not owned by each other) AAA game publishers these days and now there are fewer. But that shouldn’t keep Microsoft from buying Bethesda when they have the chance either.

lol yeah it should, that's the exact reason why they shouldn't do that

Nobody batted an eye in 2018 when they announced all those studio acquisitions, in fact lots of people celebrated it at the time. But it was bad then and it's bad now. Just like how any independent studio getting bought up by a platform holder is bad for the industry. As another example, it's also bad that Sony bought Insomniac!

The difference between Sony and MS is Sony has done a fantastic job at cultivating relationships, and trust in their studios. Thus leading to amazing first party games. We’re dunking on MS because they haven’t been able to make a solid first party game since 360 era, and are now buying out studios in order to do that. It’s pretty obvious why it’s a lame tactic.

It's not a qualitative thing though. It's about behavior that is anti-consumer. It is anti-consumer when Sony signs a deal to keep Spider-Man in Avengers only on Playstation. It's also anti-consumer to try and consolidate control of a huge portion of the industry under a single ecosystem controlled by a single company.

Buying a studio here or there is bad for the industry but it's also not the absolute end of the world either. Microsoft buying Obsidian, Double Fine, Playground, etc. is inherently a bad thing, but also there's plenty of studios out there so what can you do. In a vacuum it isn't a huge problem. But they were clearly not satisfied with the stable of great and talented studios they absorbed in 2018-2019, because their goal isn't just to "provide value to their customers". Their goal is to control the industry. The proof of that goal is their acquisition of Bethesda and also Microsoft's behavior in pretty much every other industry they operate in. They're no interested in just competing, they want control.

I mean, where does the line get drawn? What if Microsoft bought Ubisoft? What if they bought EA? When does it become worrying for people? I honestly want to know.

That’s so subjective lol I’d literally rather play 90% of their Xbox One exclusives than any Sony game

Also BUYING DEVELOPERS IS NORMAL AND EVERYONE DOES IT

You guys are just not being objective about this because gamers gonna console war

These are not hostile takeovers, these developers wanted to be bought by Microsoft, in plenty of cases probably because they “cultivated relationships”

Spoken like a true console warrior lmao

And it's always bad for consumers when "everyone does it". That doesn't make it ok just because "everyone does it" lol.

lol I'm privileged enough that I can get both consoles, eventually. I owned a PS3 and 360. I owned a PS4 and Xbox One. And I also buy Nintendo hardware. I chose to buy a PS5 first this gen but I will be getting an Xbox eventually, after a price drop, like I always do. You could not be more wrong when you call me a console warrior, believe me.

wonder whats up with the kojima productions thing - if they were bought or if the fruits of death strandings labor was far too in the red to be financially viable and they were let go?

I just still want someone to tell me when it will be enough, that's all. Microsoft is worth over $1 trillion, they can buy whoever they want. Would it be ok for them to buy Ubisoft next? Would that be too far? Capcom? Sega? What about if they bought EA? Seriously, where is the line?

This isn't just about what games will be exclusives or not, it's about who has control over how much of the industry.
