frame rate doesn’t equal wins

 

200fps is overkill anyway lol

 

I remember when I found out pros play games on the lowest frame rates and I was like why do people complain about this again??

 

Depending on the game it is important, it’s just that the law of diminishing returns is real after 60 imo

I don't remember people saying that the PS3/Xbox 360 held Rise of the Tomb Raider back, or Titanfall, or Wolfenstein the New Order, or Destiny, or COD AW, or Dragon Age Inquisition, or Alien Isolation, or Forza Horizon 2...

Every generation there are games that bridge between. MS came out and said they're going to release on both consoles for the first year or two and everyone immediately assume that Series X version will suffer rather than Xbox One version when the very last gen didn't really show that. The older gen version drops features, or has worse performance or whatever, but it doesn't hold the newer gen version back.

Let's all keep in mind the Xbox One plays Forza Horizon 3-4, Red Dead Redemption 2, Gears 4-5, and Star Wars Battlefront 1-2. It's not like MS is releasing games on the 360...

 

It absolutely did hold a number of those games back in pretty significant ways. Destiny especially was held back immensely by the fact that it had to keep feature parity with PS3/360. Bungie even had to eventually cut off support for those consoles because it was holding the game back too much. Also Dragon Age Inquisition, as great as that game was, would've been even better if it didn't have to also work on previous-gen hardware. Same goes for Alien Isolation and even Forza Horizon 2.

If an experience is being made to also run on 7-year-old hardware, then it by definition isn't taking full advantage of the new hardware and is thus being held back by the previous generation. Just because the visuals are better or the frame rate is better doesn't mean the game isn't being held back from a game design perspective.

Truly blows my mind how so many people seem to just care about flashy graphics lol like what is going on here.

 

Titanfall was funnily enough ported back down to 360 and is to this day considered a huge achievement by bluepoint.

 

Right, anything that is capable of running on last-gen hardware, even with compromises, is by definition not a "next-gen experience".

 

Not disagreeing just wanted to share this fun little piece of trivia

 

I'm not really even talking about flashy graphics haha. You're arbitrarily saying Inquisition or Isolation would have been better, like the design would have been fundamentally different but I just don't think you can say that so definitively. Like how do you know Titanfall 1 would be any different? A completely different studio made the port! Sure you can make the argument for any game being better without constraints but the fact is every game has constraints and I find it sort of strange and insulting to the devs to assume that the team didn't achieve their fullest vision because they released on two generations. It's such a weird critique of an artistic endeavor...

My point was when those games released and were GOTY contenders and reviewing well, the overall narrative wasn't "Oh but if only it didn't ship on Xbox 360 it would have been so much better..." This idea that cross-gen titles are automatically held back and thus worse titles because of it is such an odd perspective to me...

 

as someone who is playing Inquisition right now, it's quite obvious how it was held back, namely featuring 20 small hub worlds instead of a big open world lol

Also games like CoD still aren’t next-gen experiences to this day from a design perspective so that’s not really the best example to throw out there.

There’s a crash bandicoot demo for people who preordered the game coming on the 16th on ps4. Don’t know if it’s coming to Xbox or not. Must have just been announced cuz I just saw it in the PlayStation store
