I've tried looking around the forum for an IT thread, haven't found one, so I'm posting this here cause it's related to my ability to play games.

I've had a thorn in my side for some time now and it's frustrating me that I can't figure out what's going on. If anyone can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

The situation is this. My computer will be fine, playing games, doing everything, and then after a random period of time, all of a sudden certain things will stop opening. I'll try to open Bluestacks, won't open. I'll try to open Steam, won't open. Games won't open. That's about the extent of it.

Then, I'll try to restart my computer, and my computer will hang at the shutdown screen until I manually turn it off and back on, and then it'll work like normal again until the next time it fouls up.

The latter part had me thinking something was running and not responding, and that might be why certain items don't open, if that same thing isn't responding. But I can't figure out what it is. I've run scans, I've stopped and restarted numerous programs and services, and the annoying thing is that if I restart at any point, I've lost the opportunity to troubleshoot it.

Can anyone think of something I should investigate?

Have your tried opening up the Event Viewer and see if you’ve got any errors or warnings there under Application or System.

I don’t know if it’s one of the scans you’ve already done but have you scanned your hard drive to see if any disk corruptions have started happening. Part of me feels like it might be your hard drive failing so at the bare minimum I’d start backing that up if you haven’t already.

 

The computer is only a year and a half old, so a hard drive failure, while not impossible, I feel would be really unlikely.

That said, I've run checkdisk, SFC, DISM, and memory scans and there are no problems with any of them.

Also, to clarify, I have no problem opening normal programs like Chrome, Word, or Spotify. It's just games. I have more than one hard drive too, so it's not a problem that can be drilled down to one specific unit. I have Bluestacks on a different drive than I do Steam games, for example.

As for Event Viewer, the answer is no, or at least nothing relevant. The only logs under Event Viewer for applications are under Office and PowerShell, and PowerShell's logs are just informational.

 

I should also clarify that as an example, when I try to run Bluestacks, in Task Manager, the file HD-Player.exe shows as running, but nothing ever actually pops onscreen.

Same thing if I were to run, say, Elden Ring. It will show in Task Manager as running, and actually for Elden a window will pop, but it stays blank and nothing actually starts.

 

Is your graphics driver up to date?

 

Yes, I keep all my drivers up to date.

 

I'm out of ideas... You could try doing a completely clean re-install of your drivers. Also I was going to ask if the games/apps were opening off screen and trying to maximize them from the taskbar but given that Elden Ring actually launches a window I'm not sure.

 

I’ve had a similar issue. I recommend doing a proper (non-express) reinstall of the gpu driver.

Unfortunately, Windows 11 isn't an option for me.

 

I don’t generally recommend windows 11. It does next to nothing. Just this it fixed.

 

My tv is about 6ft to the left of my desk so I actually do use an office chair like the one in that vid I just turn it and move forward a bit. I slouch or lean forward though so the ergonomic benefits are lost on me. Sometimes I’ll use my couch for casual gaming but it’s about 12 ft from the tv which is too far for most games I have to be really close to the tv for anything more involved.

 

I lied, I beat rank 24 (out of 25) just now. Spent like a whole day at rank 22, though. Now I'm done.

This high up it kind of feels like every decision, every card taken and every coin spent, needs to be the correct one in order to ensure a win, and that's not really as fun anymore.

I’m hovering around 100,000 since damn these games got insanely harder especially with that skill gap most people have

 

Played more Sherlock Holmes Chapter One.

This game is much more involved than previous entries and I'm liking it a lot

 

Just discovered how easy it is to play a lot of windows only steam games on my mac and fuuucckkkk there are so many rogues I have access to now ugh.

Nope!

It's called CrossOver and it is way more simple. Just software. It does cost 40 dollars but they give you a 2 week trial without needing to put in any payment info so that's what I'm doing and it was so simple to set up and get this game going.

Obviously i'm talking about games that are no where near demanding as far as performance.

CrossOver runs the Windows software you need on Mac, Linux and Chrome OS.

I was gonna say, using a controller for The Evil Within on Gamepass was a little wonky, especially in the menus, but then I closed Steam and it turned out fine? Weird.
