I could. It's a small part of a bigger picture that I don't really feel like going into right now in terms of the website being a hard sell to friends. I posted to make one post about thinking those ads are uncomfortable and did not have the intention for going on as long as this has, I have lots of other things I need to get done rn.

Actually less. AP.net at its peak I think I once was paying over 10k a month in server fees. Servers have gotten much less expensive, and easier to run with better configured CDNs handling bandwidth spikes. But the time dedicated to keep it running, update it, pay for the domains and other platform stuff, etc. is where it really hits. Otherwise, I'd just shut the forum down, let everyone go hang out on Reddit, and probably update the main site much much less and dedicate that time to Real Work.

 

Just viewing this page, I have progressive, adobe, allegra, planned parenthood, and some kind of leather company? buffalo something, I don't know, it went away for Allegra which actually just went away and is now a Biltmore ad.

I think they all make sense for me. I do drive and do need insurance as I crash, I've been whining about allergies, potentially being sick, I just got a new wallet and maybe said it out loud so big brother is now showing me those ads and I've been to the Biltmore (though not recently). The only one I can't figure out is planned parenthood.

 

God, just reading about the ads makes me angry. Haha, I really do hate them. And believe the "true" vision of this website is the version without them. But the website still does so much traffic, that they do make money, and just reader supported subscriptions wouldn't be enough to justify the time, work and cost.

I blame Google. The world before their ad network was very nice, I worry podcasts will see a similar devaluation.

Nah, don't worry about it, I do get it, I hate them as much as everyone else. I've tried to come up with other solutions and really do wish there was a better option. I'm jealous of the sites that can do stuff like DaringFireball, and sell a sponsorship for 10k, but while we have a good reach, no label is going to spend their ad budget in that way when they can just go target people for way less on FB/'gram.

So, full paywall for the site as a whole would maybe make up ad money, but even then, probably not, since it is about 50% of what the website makes in a year. I dunno, I really should go get back to real work.

 

I use the Reddits for my mobile games and Reddit is atrocious.

I've tried multiple over the years but never one I used regularly

 

TrueAchievements, etc is the GOAT for keeping track of games.

They used to have an app but it ran terribly so they invested time to make sure the site ran in whatever browser you are using on your phone. I have it as a favorite and use it daily. Very easy to use.

They have one of for PS and Steam. They are great because they link with your profile(s) and instantly update. No having to manually enter all the games.
