I dreamt last night that I was banned from this forum it was wild

 

That’s what I love about it. When I’m some place where I want to be as specific as possible, like day the doctors office, I always I wish I were still in a German speaking country.

German also has a courtesy form (this is how Google translated it), English doesn’t.

In reality they’re probably about equally nuanced and complex, just in different ways. English has the advantages that it has been the world’s main language for a while so there are more, uh, words being added to it.

 

Well yeah every language has words that don’t translate to others haha. I’m liking ‘koi no yokan’ here - something about seeing someone and KNOWING that you’ll fall in love with them at some point, however soon or late. It’s inevitable.

Sure, but some are more known for it than others, often for good reasons. Japanese of course is definitely up there.

Now that I think of it there are quite a few German words for hospital. Spital is probably the biggest one after Krankenhaus. In some regions Spital is probably bigger.

I just checked and hospital is basically the latin word for guest house, so you guys are basically using a word that is actually wrong, you wish you called it sick people house

I also feel bad that I had to check it because I officially have this weird German degree for Latin, “Kleines Latinum” lolol

Yeah they're not really German, they're more like different languages, some of which are similar.

It's funny because Swiss people from the German part speak Swiss German as well as the very different Swiss Standard German, the latter of which is our slightly adapted version of High German (proper German for you English speaking people). Swiss Standard German and Swiss German are not the same at all.
