Aside from those fun facts, Xbox Live (and Gamepass etc.) also did I incredibly well last year. Both of these things are the reasons why I think we won’t see those new consoles as soon as people think.

Yes we will 2020 for both maybe 2021 at the latest Sony has shifted most of their first party studios focus to PS5 and 18% of developers are working on next gen games and company’s already have ps5 dev kits. And i also think the reason Sony is skipping e3 is cuz they will announce the ps5 sometime this year at either its own event or psx in December. There’s no reason to skip e3 unless they have something like that planned especially with how they have done everything right this console gen they have been in the lead since they announced the PS4 so why fuck it up now. Also there’s a patient for the ps5 that will allow for backwards compatibility for all Sony games from the ps1-ps4. So I honestly think both come out late next year with either both or one getting announced in full this year at some point and I think Xbox will do the Xbox one 2 or whatever it’s called at e3

It would be odd. Currently, the only downward curve either are going trough is production costs, which is a good one. The other arrows all seem to be pointing up. It’s a very, very different picture from the end of the last cycle.

It is weird, I don't feel ready for the start of a new generation yet. I feel like the PS4 still has a lot of life left in it. I'm no expert by any means, but I wasn't aware that the hardware was so dated that it is causing issues or severe limitations yet either.

At the end of the last gen, I was ready. Developers had totally maxed the amount of juice they could get from the PS3 I felt, and you could see not many leaps forward were being taken. Those consoles had been developed in a time where online was still developing and as such were either missing easy features or had been updated to within an inch of their lives to stay current.

I don't feel that yet. Boundaries are still being pushed with current tech. Just this last year we got God of War, Spiderman, then Horizon before that, all of which push what the console can do.

My console sounds like a helicopter when playing God Of War in 4k on my pro if that's any help to this conversation.

if the ps5 can’t play ps4 games, or at the very least if I can’t play my digital ps4 games on it, I will be fucking furious

Also in terms of graphics I feel like red dead 2 pushed this generation to its current limit. Games like AC origins and odyssey, witcher 3, etc. really push the limits as well. Hard to imagine anything else this gen exceeding the graphical work of games like those. Especially considering w3 is gonna be 4 years old soon and it’s still one of the gold standards, I think next gen is definitely sooner than we think. By the end of 2020 is my guess

Yeah, 2020 is def the start. Will be a 7 year gen, which is right in line with last gens length.

The walk speed has been reduced in the anthem demo because of problems with their engine.

Full game will have faster walking AND sprint enabled in that area.

Also you guys are extremely my people, Origins IS better than odyssey.

Origins is the sleekest of beaks. Odyssey is still a great game though.

Yeah I'm still looking forward to odyssey especially since digging into origins, even heavier rpg elements will definitely please me because so far I wish origins was a bit heavier on the rpg stuff although like I said it still feels like an rpg in a lot of ways such as the quest system, but gearing and the skill trees leave a bit to be desired. From what I've seen of odyssey I bet ill prefer the map/open world in origins but that's more personal taste because Greece does look very well done

Odyssey is great, but I think the story in Origins kept me better. The melee fighting improved a lot between the two though.

The combat in origins is annoying when 5 or more people are attacking but it's great when it's just one or two

It doesn’t matter how lang the last cycle was, what matters is hardware sales and software sales as well as engagement. 2020 might very well be the start of a new generation, but it might very well not be based on how much better the numbers are compared to when you look at the end of previous console cycles. Furthermore, the halfstep modelds changed the console cycle game. The Xbox One X (the closes thing to a next gen console) is still being sold at a loss despite its high price, because it is “too good”. Add to that that the PS4 Pro and the One X are still not the best selling models of the current consoles (definitely the case for Xbox, might have changed for PS by now but I doubt it), which means consumers more often than not think that the power is not worth the money. What would that mean for an Xbox One 2 or PS5 only one year from now?

I’d imagine the next actual Xbox will be the start of new approach to what a video game console is given their heavy interest in “platforms”, the bame thus will likely be a somewhat clean break. Might just be called Xbox or something.
