Probably about 3/4 of the way through my second playthrough of Nier Automata and it's pretty much everything I could have wanted from a Nier sequel. It improves upon the generally weak combat of the first, obviously Platinum's strong suit even if the system they used here isn't nearly as deep as their best efforts - it's no Bayonetta 2, or even Metal Gear Rising, but it is still very enjoyable and LEAGUES above what Nier offered. The story, as with every Yoko Taro game, is the reason to play this game. It starts with a pretty interesting premise and just keeps unraveling further and further, adding new layers, has you questioning the morality of the things you're doing and the nature of every party involved. If the previous games in this series/universe are any indication, even though I've almost reached two endings now, I've still seen absolutely nothing and there are plenty of crazy twists ahead of me. I don't think the characters are as strong as those in the first Nier - no one is as interesting as Kaine or Weiss or even Emil but that could very well change as I expect that I have two more go-arounds minimum before I see the true nature of this game.

Oh, and the music is PHENOMENAL.

I want Nier, but I'm probably going to wait a few months. Have Horizon and BotW to occupy me, and I've barely even touched either yet.

Can you tell me without spoilers why you need to play through multiple times and are those playthrough's mostly the same or not? Never played one of these games before.

First time through I just wanted to mainline the main story without side content, it's not a particularly long game.

Being as vague as I can here, there are multiple endings (it's typically been ~4 for the creator's games) that unlock one at a time as you replay the game. I can only speak of how the second compares to the first but it is a mix of some of the same content that you go through in a very different (and potentially much quicker) way and some completely new content. Beating the game once is only scratching the surface and really only a sort of prologue to how the story will eventually unfold.

It's very similar to the Silent Hill games. Multiple endings.

Why is every enemy in Horizon a goddamn damage sponge? This is what I get for not playing on easy - being an incredible badass is quite taxng.

You're doing it wrong if they're sponges. You have to be strategic.

Being strategic isn't always a feasible option, i.e. when you've been cornered by two Longlegs and a Ravager in a confined space with nowhere to hide.

Unless by 'be strategic' you meant just switch to easy. In which case, my unwavering badassness won't allow such a thing.

I didn't know where to put this but one of my favorite Smite pros named Cyclonespin plays smite ranked with anime music and it's truly the best thing.

It makes me want to play smite like that.

I mean that method seems to largely favor post SNES era games which means it is kind of useless when making an "of all time list" but of course those games on that list are good

Right, what I mean is it favours everything post-SNES and it more or less excludes the SNES era AND everything before
