I even agree that stuff like that can happen unconsciously, especially to people that aren’t trained writers/journalists, which is why I keep saying that traditional video games media shouldn’t speed up its own demise by hiring people that aren’t actually journalists/writers/etc. for positions that don’t suit them. Then again some of them turn out great so whatever I guess.

    Just a friendly reminder

Playing GTA V for the first time and yeah, the narrative is weak as hell. The hamfisted, cheap satire is nauseatingly unfunny and there isn't a character that I truly care about. I'm having fun of course because it's GTA, but I really don't care about where it's going.

Nah, GTA does. It says nothing, and is just an exaggeration of everything wrong with society (sexism, racial stereotypes, abuse, senseless violence, etc). I don't buy the satire excuse, it's more like a parody than that. Sure the games are fun to play and their worlds are impressive. No doubt. I finished GTA v years ago. But focus solely on the stories and characters, and there's not much praise. Trevor is just your typical excessive prick. It's like he exists solely for the excuse of extra nonsensical shit in the game, and he's an abusive dickhead among other things. overall, he's not that fascinating.

Final Fantasy series is usually good with stories. The telltale series' games are fairly consistent. Firewatch. Child of light (imo it was pretty memorable, and I haven't touched it in forever). There are others that I'm forgetting. the Bioshock trilogy was very interesting. I loved persona 5. I can't remember anything else ATM, but yeah there's a lot of video games out there that do a pretty good job of telling good (and sometimes great, esp in the case of some final fantasy) stories.

Persona 4/5 are the most interested I've been in a games story in recent years

I btw think GTA style exaggeration/parody is valid. Not everything has to make a bigger point, a gut punch can be enough.

Talking of old games I picked up the Return To Arkham for £12 on in the ps summer sale the other day. It’s been great fun jumping back into the Arkham Asylum. The remastered graphics look great and the gameplay still holds up well. I still think Hamill as the Joker (in both the games and animated films) is the best incarnation we’ve had of that character in all media forms.

I’ve loved all the Arkham games (even Origins and Knight). So it’s been awsome starting to replay these. From my memory City was my favourite out the two, so I’m looking forward to getting to that once I’ve done Asylum.

I hope with Spiderman coming out (and it looking like it’ll be a success - I’m really looking forward to this too) that we get some more comic book games in the same style of the Arkham/Spiderman games.

    Filip is a dumbass

Kotaku is a rag and Jason is a snarky glorified tabloid writer with misguided friends in the right places that feed him information, and a terrible critic. Everytime he leaks a Ubisoft game he acts like he’s taking down President Nixon.

    YouTube sucks

    Peace

i actually quite like some of kotaku's reviews/retrospectives when they go more analytical or gonzo style. but, they - and many, many gaming websites regrettably - right now still function as group blogs for the most part.

also FUCK he monetized the "apology" video too lmao

    Play the Yakuza series

GTA:SA had quite a nice story, even if it felt very by the numbers at times

Anyone playing the BLOPS4 beta? Wondering if it’s worth getting. Haven’t bought a game since Super Mario Oddysey. WW2 was cool but got old pretty quick.

I dabbled for a little bit last night. Very reminiscent of the rest of the black ops series, although they added a few more "tactical" game modes and are limiting specialists to one per team. Be interesting to see how the cod community reacts or if everyone still just plays domination and tdm. I enjoyed it but whether it'll have any lasting power is up in the air. For me that probably depends on if Black Out is good and I can play that to mix things up.

i actually like SA the best for its narrative i think (havent played VC yet tho). it's still GTA in that it's like an amalgamation of g-funk/west coast hip hop cliches but i would argue it engages with race much more legitimately than V did

They just shut down the original servers like last week I think. Though everyone had switched over to 2.0 by like 2004 anyway. God that game was da shit
