but games are always going to be the deciding factor. most changes to the core gaming experience are abandoned immediately if welcomed at all. it feels like only Nintendo is pulling this off (DS, Wii, Switch) - and it’s only because of their exclusive titles. people don’t want to relearn how to play Call of Duty. they just want the prettiest version. the frills are always a bonus.

 

That KH3 situation still has me dumbfounded, as someone who loves the series, it’s insanely convoluted and Xbox players have no way to catch up unless they own an entirely different console.

 

See that's the problem. The "competition" angle (Microsoft is screwed because they "can't compete"). The fact that we have to have these conversations in the first place. But nobody thinks about it that way, haha.

Everything that you are glad about and think is good, is also, actually bad when taken in a broader context.

Also "sure it sucks you need every console but..." is the issue here. This shouldn't have to happen in the first place.

They wouldn't have the confidence to make deep games with high production values because of lack of support because of lack of capital...which again, sucks, and should not have to be an issue. So they go with better the devil you know.

Then there's the fact that online multiplayer on XB1 (completely) & PS4 (outside of FTP games) is not free either.

And the PSN store user interface still sucks btw.

 

yeah capitalism sucks loads of ass but the only realistic conversation to have is how change can happen now as things are without totally sinking the industry ya know?

 

I mean, lootboxes or in-game gambling with real money for digital items needs to be made illegal, which would cut loads of revenue for the industry, but it needs to happen.

 

I would ask, why is it "inevitable"? It can be streamlined across platforms. Let me take a recent example - AC Origins. Huge, huge open world. Heard next to nothing about major issues. It's on all 3 (xb1/ps4/pc) platforms. Of course they run differently (due to OS & hardware), but nobody here has to worry about having one specific platform to play it on.

Honestly I agree. It's taken too much of my money. Just today I blew $10 to buy in game currency hoping I'd get an ultimate hero skin in Mobius but it didn't. I know I didn't have to do it, but...it's just...It's not healthy

 

because there’s a history of it (Elder Scrolls on PS3 comes to mind). def not saying it would always happen, but it absolutely would happen.

That's on the developers to fix. With all this technology and how everything has come a long way, there is literally no excuse (anymore).

 

$$$$$$ and old people in politics don't give a shit about it unless they can attach some moralistic think of the children bullshit like "violence" in video games and stuff. I mean there's definitely a discussion to be had about glorifying violence and imperialism, but that's not what they go after. They don't understand lootboxes or candy crush and there's money to be made so what's their incentive to regulate it?

what's your point? I said "anymore". the ps3 was 2006.

 

you said it was “on the developers to fix”, which was referring to them in context i figured. it’s def a problem that could rear its head in the future as console manufacturing splits towards different chip sets and such. even on PC there is disparity with performance depending on who produced things like what brand of graphics card, etc.

 

I don't think anyone's arguing that buying exclusive rights to third party games just to keep them from other consoles is a good thing. At least I'm not. That's trash.

I quit smite like a month ago and I'm so glad I did.

They basically been working purely on skins and adventures to sell more stuff while the balancing is awful.

They now introduced even worse chests and grind systems to get certain skins and screw that game forever.

 

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is apparently great. 90 on metacritic so far. I really enjoyed the first game, so I'm pretty excited to continue my character's journey.

 

Not gonna reply to that person but I guess everything I like sucks and saying that Bloodborne is good makes me a capitalism-loving corporation sympathizer. Great, go off. Peace, y’all.

How should the small indie developers handle these types of exclusivity issues? Take the most money they can from whoever is willing to pay them just so they can maybe make more games?

 

Friend gifted me Monster Prom on Steam because we’ll be drinking/playing this weekend. I read its wiki page and saw it took inspiration from You’re the Worst, Archer and Bojack Horseman.
