Self titled is easily their weakest album, and it’s great

I remember my local Hollister selling (trying to sell, more like it) copies of Contra at the check out desk for years.

 

I like Contra.

Me too, but you try convincing the scores of mall patrons to buy those CDs from hollister

 

I just listened to Contra for the first time in a LONG time, and I still like it a lot, although it really does bum me out that "Giant" & "Jonathan Low" aren't on the album. "Giving Up The Gun" was my favorite song on the album back then and I think it still is. Just so damn great.

The way everything locks in for that part of Run is my favorite moment in the entire VW catalog. Just magic, like pretty much all of Contra

 

Vampire weekend production is some of my favorite too in general. This song sounds awesome

 

I absolutely love the self-titled, so many weird little instrumentation moments that really work for me. Stuff like that is what I was personally missing from FOTB (again, an album I still really love)

I agree in part with this. There is an element from the first 3 records that is definitely missing from FOTB (I don’t think for worse or better in this case), but it’s definitely something that I’ll have my eye (or ear?) on going forward. It’s like a slight shift that is great now but could prove less interesting if they go down a more straight forward road. I like when they get weird. That being said they have also given no reason to doubt them thus far. I’m pretty confident whatever they do next will be fantastic.

 

Not gonna lie, I haven’t listened to this front to back.
