I'm actually a pretty big fan of Jeff Daniels. Yeah, I can think of a few roles of his that aren't that great, but the guy turned in a great dramatic performance as Colonel Joshua Chamberlain in Gettysburg and then the next year he was funny as hell in Dumb and Dumber. I honestly feel like the terribleness of The Newsroom has kinda tarnished his legacy.

Maybe it's just because I was a kid in the 90's who watched a TON of movies and the guy was everywhere then popping up in all sorts of roles.

Is his legacy really tarnished? He seems pretty well respected overall, although he was in that really bad HBO movie about Trump and Comey that just came out.

Everyone does a bad movie except for John Cazale. Daniel Day-Lewis was in Nine.

  4. Man I love Gettysburg. Too bad God's and Generals sucked.

  5. Not sure Jeff Daniels has a “legacy” but if he does, Dumb and Dumber To is the title that would ruin it

Speed remains a fun dumb action movie but it has the worst dialogue. It didn’t surprise to learn a few years ago Joss Whedon wrote 98.9% of the dialogue.

Lt. Herb "Mac" McMahon: Don't get dead.

Jack: Miss, can you handle this bus?
Annie: Oh sure. It's just like driving a really big Pinto.

Ortiz: You're not too bright, man, but ya got some big round hairy cajones.
    Jack: That's very gross, Ortiz.
Ortiz: Huh, can't even pay him a compliment.

Stephens: [Dismayed] We're at the airport.
    Ortiz: Yeah, so?
Stephens: I already seen the airport.

Howard Payne: Jack, nothing tricky now. You know I'm on top of you! DO NOT attempt to grow a brain!

Ortiz: I'm telling ya, honey, he's somewhere jerking off.
Annie: He didn't have to get ON the bus in the first place, Ortiz. Hey, get your ass behind the yellow line!

Helen: Are they going to help us?
Stephens: Sure they are, they're the police. Hey, your taxes are paying their salaries. We die, they gotta take a pay cut.

Howard Payne: See, I'm in charge here! I drop this stick, and they pick your friend here up with a sponge! Are you ready to die, friend?
    Harry: Fuck you!
Howard Payne: Oh! In two hundred years we've gone from "I regret but I have one life to give for my country" to "Fuck you!"?

I should add that recent SNL has mostly taken up that mantle. Every Sunday morning I have to read about something embarrassing they did the night before.

Glenn Kessler was a lost cause long before he decided to watch The West Wing. The better criticism of this kind of critique is that The West Wing never convinced anyone of anything, it just reinforces what liberals already believe because they have to believe it

"The Newsroom" didn't tarnish Daniels's reputation at all. In the cultural zeitgeist, it's still pretty well regarded, with him being a standout.

This is nice to hear. Honestly, whenever I hear it even mentioned at all it is being shit on or ridiculed.

Con Air is my personal number 1 when it comes to 90s action movies. The Rock, Speed, Face/off are all superb though

Humorously morbid but when I was a kid, after seeing Face/Off friends and I would “recreate it” in our backyards, running around yelling “give me your face!” / “give me my face back!” While shooting each other with finger guns

We even made paper faces of each other to tape over ours like a crappy Hannibal Lecter or Nicolas Cage / John Travolta
