They have grown pass that. I will say things back then were sadly different. I am glad honestly though that type of hate has began to be unacceptable.

 

as a gay man their music helped me process my faith after have been subjected to conversion therapy for 3 years. I came out with it but they have seemed to have lost it. I can understand his pain and would like to hear them move from just separating themselves from their faith to absolve them from what they said during it to being clear about the things they did under its sway.

 

People are allowed to grow and denounce their former shitty selves. From what I can tell, this band has done just that.

 

Yea, I think they're very far removed from how they were back then. People have even complained about how much they go on and on about denouncing their faith and everything for the Erase Me cycle! It's a definite full step in the right direction, the only thing I'd say is that I don't think they ever said anything about acknowledging what hurtful things they may have said or done while under that banner. So there's definitely room there to grow, and knowing this now it would be nice to actively call their past selves out. It's one thing to acknowledge how the branding of being a Christian band affected them, it's another to acknowledge what they themselves may have done that affected others.

 

I wouldn’t be friends with myself from 15 years ago either.

 

They are absolutely allowed to grow, and I’m sure that the intensity of which they were denouncing their former selves has to do with instances like these. However, when these instances come to light, the band should still address them specifically and not hope that their blanket denouncing covers every shitty thing they’ve said or done.

 

The fact that we even use terms like “allowed to grow” as if we have any personal say about who a person or group of people are able to become (especially people we don’t even know) is so creepy to me. It weirds me out every time something scandalous comes up about someone on the Internet, sometimes even more so than the scandal itself.

Like, even people who go to prison for horrible things have the opportunity to grow even if they don’t have the opportunity to really thrive.

I know I’m nitpicking. I just think we need to change our terminology when we seek to hold people accountable.

 

editing because I was annoyed by your response: but I’ll simply state that I think you’ve misunderstood the use of that phrase, nobody is granting them permission, but just stating it as a fact of the universe.

 

There definitely was a small but vocal crowd of fundamentalists during the mid-00s which no one can deny but as others have said, the members of Underoath have aged and made the decision to abandon those beliefs in the 15 years since the user had that interaction with the band.

There are plenty of non-secular bands and fans that disagree with any homophobia in the scene and will call it out and address it. I think it’s important to not label the scene as belonging to homophobes or “conservatives” in order to rid those people from it.

This stream is literally the reason I signed up for Twitch and subscribed to the Twitch band channel. I've been watching it since it started at 5 pm PST and loving it.

This record will forever be my favorite.

 

The stream last night was really fun. It was nice to see that even though Aaron wasn’t involved he still really enjoys the album. If the new album is even just 15% as heavy as this album I’ll be so happy.

 

Do they save the streams as videos to watch later? Would love to watch those.

 

Did they say they were going to write music in that direction again or do I need to brace myself for Erase Me Part Two?

 

I believe so - yeah. They had their Erase Me video for viewing a day afterwards so I’m sure that’ll continue to be the case.

That album really pushed their sound into places that were just perfect for my tastes (heaviness/riffiness/experimentation). They were talking about how Daniel coming in really unlocked a burst of creative energy that they were already wanting to lean into, which really paid off in what they were able to accomplish.
