No worries! I’m sure there has for sure been some changes here and there, but Matt Goldman (who they’ve used a ton) is relatively hands off. I think he’s really good at helping bands capture their vision, but doesn’t typically rewrite or rework songs. Seems like the band was wanting a little something more this time around, thus going with someone who would be a bit more “collaborative”.

ahh gotcha; the comparison with goldman is very helpful. this fills a big gap in my understanding of music creation haha

Interesting to see them going in a more polished direction. I remember 10 years or so ago they were very against that sort of thing. David Bendeth mixed LITSOS and (if I recall correctly, it's been a while since I've seen the documentary) basically tried to convince them to let him mix it for a more radio friendly sound and they turned that idea down. At the very least they had disagreements over type of music he usually worked with. I don't think it's a bad thing, just a surprising change in attitude for them!

Having said that, you have bands like The Chariot who used to consider Goldman as an extra member of the band.

Yea! And for clarity, I’m not trying to diminish his touch, I think he’s great (did a track with him once and he was an awesome dude on top of his talent). Mostly mean he’s not gonna pull a Feldman and rewrite your track haha

you can kinda tell. on my teeth feels super “produced,” whereas even paper lung still feels pretty organic and raw for a single that is the softest song on an album

Yeah, totally agree. You're definitely going to have to point me in the direction of your track that you did with him now though. Would love to listen!

There’s a great conversation there where they say they could write a hit single like nickleback if they wanted to or something haha

Pre-pro is a pretty foreign concept to me tbh, I never really entirely understood what it meant/entailed when bands said they were at that stage tbh lol.

The way I understand it, it’s like demoing but with a producer.

  16. I'm old enough to remember when DTGL was called overproduced. Heh.

I remember when DTGL came out, my friends said that Spencer was trying to copy how Dallas sounded in Maylene.

I still have some friends that hold on to Dallas being the end all be all when it comes to underoath and my response is always “I think Spencer’s doing just fine” to which they never have anything to respond with.

I had someone saying DTGL was just Underoath trying to be Norma Jean. Certainly massive similarities but cmon.

That's so weird because I feel like I remember an old interview with Spencer where he said he was kind of trying to sound like Dallas on TOCS, and that his screams on DTGL were a lot more in-line with how he used to scream in his previous band.

The only pre-Spencer song I know is "The Sun Still Sleeps" and I thought Dallas sounds absolutely horrible in it. That's why I never bothered past that song. Not sure if/how he improved in Maylene (never heard of them).

Any good harmonies between Aaron and Spencer? How much does Spencer sing vs Aaron?
