Why do my points get lost in the examples I use? I never said, "Alien isn't very good." I just waited too long to watch it, and it didn't work for me given how far removed I am from its era. Had I watched it many, many years ago, I'm sure I would've appreciated it more and perhaps loved it. I know people who say the same thing after just watching 'The Goonies' for the first time. When you're so far removed from the context in which something was released, you never know how that something is going to be received 2-4 decades later.

The point was: some records, as well as films, are products of their time. Some hold up; some do not. If I heard "Identity Crisis" today by some other band, I know I wouldn't respond to it. At the time, it was awesome. That record introduced them to some great people which eventually led to Illusion. From there, it was a quick ascent to a major label bidding war.

 

The goonies is incredible no matter when you watch it for the first time

Yep. It’s why kids every single year get introduced to and love it. Timeless.
