we're all a bunch of weirdos on a quest to belong Prestigious

My Thrice story is that when i was in 7th grade i would wear my Juliana Theory t shirt to school every day. This shirt had a silhouette of a dude rocking out with his guitar. A cool 9th grader named Chris always had cool band shirts and he approached me and said “hey man, that’s a sick shirt. Juliana Theory are incredible”. He happened to be wearing a Thrice shirt. I took note.... later that day my mom gave me a ride to Gray Whale our local cd/music store. I bought Illusions of Safety... and my love of Thrice was born.

That summer Artist In The Ambulance came out, that fall i saw them with Thursday and Coheed and Cambria. They’ve been a top 3 band for me ever since.

I first heard Thrice when my friend let me listen to his ipod in 9th grade back in 2004/2005. I saw Thrice on there and had heard that they were a good band. I clicked with TAITA after listening to just a few songs and ended up buying it and Illusion of Safety within the next couple weeks. Then Vheissu came out when I was in 10th grade. I bought it right away and at first I was shocked by the change in direction, but after a few more listens I was 110% sold.

Oh, I should’ve clarified. That was in 2008. I got seriously into Underoath the next year and have been a casual fan of heavy music ever since. Haha.

I played Image of the Invisible on drums on Rock Band. I thought “that song was good. I wonder if they have other good songs.”

    they did

I'm not the biggest fan of Season 5, but the Ron Howard narration still aims to please.

I didn't read the post that way and I'm very disappointed in myself. I just corrected my mistake.

It's blowing my mind how many of you first heard Thrice through TAITA, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I probably wouldn't have heard of them until TAITA had I not lived in the same county as Kensboom, Teppow and Wreckin' Bridges.

I keep wondering how I would've responded to the band if my first exposure was TAITA. Keep in mind, the first song I ever heard from them was "Phoenix Ignition" so odds are I would've liked them. However, it's probable I would've first heard "All That's Left," and I never once enjoyed that song – even as a multiyear Thrice fan by that point. I've talked at length how their first official singles, minus 'Honey' and 'Grey,' are songs I tend to like least in their catalog. However, I can still listen to their other first singles without skipping. "All That's Left" is the only one I will always skip.

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade who first discovered the band through that song (or anyone who likes/liked that song). I'm just thinking out loud as to whether I'd be here today if "All That's Left" was the first note I ever heard from the greatest band alive.

I mean I was 12 which is right around when I started discovering music outside of what my parents/neighborhood kids showed me.

    yeah good okay Prestigious

I hated this dumb band because "Stare At The Sun" was lame to me and my friend was like yo but check out Blood Clots & Black Holes, Under A Killing Moon, and Paper Tigers. 14 years later and I listen to a ton of metal because Thrice helped bridge that gap into the world of heavier stuff.

I had heard a couple songs from TAITA that I bought on iTunes individually (lol), but it wasn't until I walked into a mall music store on vacation in Florida a year or so later, saw Live at the House of Blues CD/DVD on sale for $10 I think, and just bought it on a whim to play back at the hotel. I still can remember hearing Lion and the Wolf into Firebreather for the first time. Incredible.

Edit: Definitely the first song I heard was Image of the Invisible on Madden.

Weird, I'm being picked on again despite not saying anything disrespectful towards anyone else. Can't an old-school Thrice fan ponder the 'What if I discovered Thrice via All That's Left?' question without being attacked? Lots of people miss out on great bands by judging one song and immediately writing them off.

I come here to bond with my fellow Thriceans because I don't know too many in real life. I knew a ton at one point, but they dropped off once they didn't like Vheissu (at the time of its release) and the new direction the band's sound was headed.

If I regularly mocked others or replied to other users' posts with snarky comment after snarky comment, I'd understand this treatment. However, no matter what I say, I'm bashed for something. This is not a blanket statement, of course. Some of you are super cool towards me, and I truly appreciate it. Plus, you're the ones who convinced me to come back after I took a two week sabbatical.

Still, I shouldn't have to duck for cover over an innocuous post.

Mike J, what's your least favorite Thrice song from each album?

Disclaimer: Even so-so Thrice songs have redeeming qualities, parts, moments, aspects, components, etc. After all, they're the best band alive. Thus, even the songs I'm about to list have some/many redeeming qualities. However, I just find myself skipping them the most. That said, I do like some of them in sequence. But, the question related to "least favorite..."

Identity Crisis - "Ultra Blue" (...if I had to pick one; I have a sentimental attachment to that record so I embrace its faults.)
Illusion - "See You in the Shallows"
    Artist - "All That's Left"
Vheissu - "Like Moths to Flame" (I know it has some awesome riffs as well as one of their best outros; the chorus is just dreadful, though. I would've put either of the B-sides on an otherwise perfect record.)
    Fire - "The Flame Deluge"
Water - "King Upon the Main"
    Air - "Broken Lungs"
Earth - "Come All You Weary"
    Beggars - "Doublespeak"
    M/m - "Treading Paper"
    TBEITBN - "Wake Up"

    *Ducks for cover again*

"Like Moths To Flame" (I think the chorus is wonderful) and "Broken Lungs" (one of the best songs on Air) are the only real ones I have contention with. The rest are all fair choices imo.

Do you prefer "Like Moths to Flame" to "Weight of Glory" or "Flags of Dawn"?

Man, I tried and tried to fall in love with "Broken Lungs." It just never clicked.
