I've listened to this album through more times already than I have M/M.

Man, that CoS review was terrible and lazy, the antithesis of this album. Just through my first listen and immediately starting it again.

"Hurricane" is great, but not what I was expecting from the opener, and other than that my favorites would have to be "The Window" and everything after "Seneca", but there isn't a track on here I don't like.

Speaking of Seneca, can someone who knows how to mess with audio files make one of those 10-hour loops of that track?

While it is weaker, on the whole, as an album...M/M contains one of my favorite Thrice songs. I could listen to Words in the Water on repeat from now on and be completely content.

I really liked M/m too. "Yellow Belly", "Promises", "Call It In the Air", "Blur", and "Anthology" are all great.

M/M was definitely a weaker album for me, but definitely agree that it has some really great songs.

Really enjoying this one, surpassed expectations. A really solid blend of all their sounds since Vheissu. Get a lot of that record and Alchemy throughout this one.

m/m was my least fav thrice record which is why my expectations were so low. maybe that has contributed to me liking this alot more than i thought i would.

:) agreed, man. and i assume we need to talk about your tweet? ha. i like it a lot. its better than i expected - black honey is much better than i remember. id have liked it a bit heavier honestly, but i think its great for a less heavy thrice record. kinda sounds like a mix of vheissu and beggars. its just so damn good to have them back

I do feel like this record is a bit like a superstar athlete coming back from a long term injury.. there is something really special about their play and they are still better than most of the competition but they are still just honing their skills again.. I think they could still write a better record progressing from this sound.

Opening and ending of The Window. Parts of Hurricane, specifically the end. Chorus of Death From Above, even the verses in Black Honey.

Good analogy. Like Jordan returning to the Bulls for the end of the '95 season and playoffs. He was still great, but it wasn't quite enough to push them all the way to the title.

I thought Beggars was Thrice's best album. No skips on that one. I'm exciting for the new one!

I'm starting my third listen now, but I'll post some of my initial thoughts that I can remember.

For me, this is a back-heavy album. That's not a knock against the front half of the album at all, but I think the album really starts firing on all cylinders with Stay With Me. From that song on, it's nothing but great tracks to me. Black Honey is still a good jam too, despite the weak lyrics. My only other complaint about the back half, although a small complaint, is I would have liked to have a little more breathing room between Whistleblower and Salt And Shadow. The transition feels abrupt. I think the former should have rung out a bit more and faded away before the latter comes in, but, like I said, just a small complaint.

The front half is good. Hurricane and The Long Defeat are the only ones that really stand out to me, particularly the latter. I still feel indifferent towards Blood On The Sand, though I've warmed up to it a bit at this point. I like The Window and Wake Up, but they don't really stand out to me much at all, which makes tracks 2-4 kinda fly by me.

Overall, I really like this album, maybe even love it. I gotta sit with it longer than just a couple hours, but I definitely feel content with this album. Early standouts are Stay With Me, Death From Above, Whistleblower, and Salt And Shadow (like I said, this album is firing on all cylinders towards the end). I think it's definitely a natural progression from what they were doing with Beggars and M/M. They did a nice job at incorporating that makes their sound interesting to me, as there are some elements of Air on this album (The Long Defeat, Death From Above, Salt And Shadow) and even Water (the aforementioned Salt And Shadow). The production on this album is really nice too. Everything is blended together so evenly and so nicely, it really makes this record groove.

I'm happy with it. I can see this staying in rotation for a little while now.

Just curious, having not heard the album yet. Does Salt and Shadow fill the entire 6 minutes?

Naw. 4.5 minutes of silence at the end.

Yes. The whole six minutes are amazing.

Like I know Death From Above is about bombings but does anyone else feel it could also be about his time in that church? Feels like it could be along with Whistleblower

Excellent. Didn't really expect much "filler" from Thrice, but sometimes a 6 minute song in the studio is really a 4:30 song if it were to be played live.

I feel like whistleblower could be about it, but death from above feels like its too straight forward to have a double meaning.

I mean whistleblower is straight forward as hell too. Anything can have a double meaning, whether it's abstract or obvious.

This would be a great song title too.

I've thought that, but I don't necessarily know that Dustin would play so lightly with the metaphor of killing and compare what happened with the church to that.

I don't see it as playing lightly given Driscoll's thoughts on women and LGBT+ people.
