this album title randomly popped into my head today and I chuckled. its awful what were they thinking haha

Just sounds really silly to me. Like any album title you think sounds really silly to you. It's just a name. Doesn't matter all too much.

It doesnt make sense gor 99% of what you could apply it to. then I looked up the extended quote from the philosopher who coined it....yeah it doesnt have anthing to do with the meaning of album because the album isn't about (traveling). They must have just thought it sounded cool.

 

The meaning I put to it is about social media. We are so busy being everywhere with social media and Internet, that we are not even present where and with who we physically are. Therefore, to be everywhere is to be nowhere. This subject is present in Salt and Shadow.

 

It is possible they found their own meaning in it. I mean I hardly doubt they just rounded up a bunch of words for the album title that has nothing to do with the actual record. Thrice doesn't strike me as a band to name an album just because 'it sounds cool'.

 

Technology and social media allows us to be in a multitude of places at once, without truly being in any of those places at all, which is what Salt and Shadow is all about. I think they're trying to say that the position we have found ourselves in socially (politically, spiritually, etc.) is a result of not being grounded in any one place, letting fear and panic to spread through social media, the news, etc. At least that's what it means to me

 

@Your Milkshake how can you not get out anything from this quote? ;D to me it's actually pretty smart, and you could adjust it to nearly any settings. Even wikipedia cites some interviews with Dustin and Riley explaining why they used the title, and to me it makes total sense, also, after their hiatus that took place just due their need to stay in one place for a moment and focus.

This one makes a bit of sense even if it's a bit trite to me. Certainly took something and redefined it.

When I see the phrase written on paper it irks me a bit.

And now why take a largely inconsequential and very specific quote from a philosopher and change what it means. Im willing to bet thats one of that guys least poignant quotes to begin with.
