I want to be strong enough
To not let my terror turn to hate
    Surrounded by jingoists
I don't want any part of this

    The sky is falling
And no one will lift their eyes to see
    The sky is falling
And no one cares as long as it lands overseas

It's scary how relatable these lyrics are today..

Also, how much of it "not translating live" was attributed to their fan base (circa 2005) wanting them to play their shredders instead? (Even though the song shreds as much as any song in the bridge/outro.)

Obviously, today's fan base is far more receptive than 2005's fan base which still had IC/TIoS/TAITA holdovers still.

Anyone who's still a fan of the band after 17 years loves MOST, if not ALL, of their work, not just their work from 1999 to 2003. The fans that griped about the IC/TIoS/TAITA sound disappearing eventually gave up.

holy shit this is as poignant as black honey as a metaphor for US foreign policy (dustin explicitly stated thats what black honey is about)

I was at the Glasshouse show the next night and was really pleased with the set list. Instead of Circles they gave us Blur. I loved the order of the Glasshouse show, but I would have loved to see Circles.

You guys also got Red Sky while we got Cataracts (which I enjoyed). You guys also didn't get Dust but you did get Words.

Ah, that's right. Glad I got those songs because I was able to get Dust at Taste of Chaos and the Shrine show.

Love the audio, the video itself sucks though. All weird angled close ups and out of focus shots and the edits are weird. Whoever was lucky enough to film this dropped the ball..

Don't agree. I love all their work, but I don't think we are on a higher pedestal then people who liked their earlier stuff more. To be honest, heavy thrice is the best thrice.

But about For Miles, I still think it has to do with the mood and tone the album version has that doesn't carry over live. It's not about the fans wanting heavy stuff only because thrice played a ton of Vheissu songs when the album came out.

I'm still with the band and I don't love all their work so you're wrong.

Even though you've said that same sentence before in here, again I do understand. Just disagreeing.

There's no point in me re-explaining since you've already dug yourself into your position. That position is completely separate from my point.

Thrice's sound changed in 2005 via Vheissu. The upset fans who clamored for their old sound eventually gave up on the band. Thus, the fans that are still with them are receptive to just about anything they do.

If there are Thrice fans still pining away for TAITA Part II after 13 years, then that's an incredible waste of time and energy. (These people don't exist.)

And that's why the fan base TODAY is more receptive to songs that wouldn't go over well in 2005. 2005 still had a mixture of IC/TIoS/TAITA's fan base while Vheissu opened the door for new fans as well as the open minds and evolving tastes of existing fans.

The people who couldn't accept this change took their business elsewhere. It took some longer than others, but there was definitely a changing of the guard.

So, the 2005 fan base's reception of a song like "For Miles" is a lot different than the 2016 fan base's reception. Furthemore, Vheissu has only become more beloved over the years and "For Miles" is a big reason why. Riley said recently how people didn't like Vheissu at first but over the years, it's grown on people (as well as young bands) and become their most important/influential work.

Certain songs just need to be deployed at the right time.

Unless you're secretly a member of Thrice, please cool down with the condescension. You're not the only one who has seen them live a bunch of times and read their interviews. Your opinion is just that and nothing more. Unless your name is Dustin Kensrue, Ed or Riley Breckenridge, or Teppei Teranishi, you're not the butcher. You're just a fan who has completely, unnecessarily taken oven a discussion.

I know a lot of people who actually were very receptive to Vheissu that loved thrash and post hardcore. Also major minor is a great record, so many bands would kill to have that in their arsenal

I don't disagree with this completely. Vheissu songs are better received now than they were in 2005.. I think they could get away with playing only songs from Vheissu on now and many fans wouldn't complain. I know I wouldn't

The idea that For Miles wasn't well received closer to the release of Vheissu is just not very true at all based on the shows I attended. One of the biggest sing-a-longs almost instantly.

Agreed. I think they've played it every time I've seen them.
