I feel like a jerk correcting this three pages later, but "Like Moths to Flame" is actually about Peter when he denies Christ three times. The chorus is right out of Matthew 26:33-35 and the bridge is a poetic rendering of the actual denial. It's not dissimilar from Judas's story, but I think it adds even more personal weight since it's from the perspective of one of Jesus's closest disciples. I think your description of the song itself is still right on though. So incredibly good.

Not only is this album STILL getting better the more I listen, but all of my friends who are into Thrice (including my best bud) are absolutely giddy about how amazing this album is. I love it. I've never minded enjoying a record all to myself, but when the people around you share your enthusiasm it just makes it that much more fun. :)

Before this album, I only really came back round to Beggars. But now, I've spun through the whole Alchemy Index, Vheissu and M/m in the past week and Thrice has become my second favorite band. I love this.

Dustin is just incredible.. I'm listening to carry the fire with the YouTube commentary... He may be my favorite artist, just trying to comprehend how much great music he has given me to listen to over the years. This record unlocked all of that for me.. You call a band your favorite band long enough sometimes it just becomes words but when that moment where you are reminded WHY they are your favorite band comes to fruition you are truly grateful. To say I am excited to see them in a week would be a huge understatement..

I need to spend more time with Carry The Fire. I loved Please Come Home and Thrice is my favorite band, but I for some reason I only listened to Carry The Fire once or twice through and never went back to it. Maybe I'll check out the YouTube commentary now.

I did too! And then I listened to the new thrice record 30 times and when I came back to this, it suddenly clicked with me. I listened to thrice for like 5 hours yesterday and I wanted something with Dustin but that was a little lighter and it was perfect. Now I can't stop listening ha

It's funny for me Carry the fire instantly clicked. I loved that record so much right off the bat. So when this new Thrice album came out because I was so into Dustin's solo record it made me appreciate Thrice's music that much more.

Really upset that I missed the Austin show last night. I'm in Dallas and even though I knew I wouldn't be going, I'm still sad about it.

I also took a while to get into Carry the Fire but yeah. It's great. Can't wait to get into it more after I'm done listening to TBEiTBN.

I wish "It's Not Enough" and "Carry The Fire" were Thrice songs. I'm pretty sure he said that both were meant to be Thrice songs at first. Musically speaking.

I've never listened to the Water and the Blood album. Was it any good? (I don't know why I'm asking this question, Dustin can do no wrong.)

It's a praise & worship album. I've never taken the time to check it out but I do like the song It's not enough.

It's definitely a worship record but it's not typical CCM. It's a Dustin album, no question. "Suffering Servant," "It's Not Enough" and "The Voice of the Lord" could have all been on a Thrice record if not for the lyrical content. They're awesome.

I think Gallows from Carry the Fire is one of the top 5 songs Kensrue's ever written--Thrice included.

    Fight the long defeat.

That's the primary example I had in mind, but while I'm usually a big fan of Matt Thiessen's writing, I find those lyrics too direct. The inclusion of the words "filter" and "devices" in the chorus feel a little obvious and clunky. (Of course, I'm nit-picking; the song isn't half bad.)

On the other hand, Dustin captures an elegance through abstraction with his writing style on "Salt and Shadow". The second and third verses in particular are sheer poetry.

There's a great interview with him on the Noise Creators podcast that was released recently if you're interested in his work.

So, I went back and watched Dustin's performances from 2015 today. I haven't been able to shake this feeling that he's laboring right now during their live shows. And I think I'm right as I noticed it in-person at Shrine and in the other live sets I've watched online.

The first two shows back last year he sounded quite strong throughout their sets.

Again, right now, he just doesn't seem to have the stamina to hold up an entire show. He's a warrior, though. Dustin at half strength is still a beast.

As I said, I first noticed it in-person at Shrine. And having watched all his performances via cell phones the last 20 years, something seemed off in this most recent batch too.

We both know how much this man means to me.
