That one has grown on me a lot. It's weird, but the drum sound at 3:32 always reminds me of the percussion loop at the end of "videotape" which gets me hyped I guess lol

Is this tour not selling well? Looks like the Charlotte show was moved from 2,000 cap venue to the 800 cap venue next door.

the venue theyre playing here posted 'last chance for tix' today so i snagged em just in case but it couldve just been a marketing thing to make hold outs like me commit.

riley said in the discord the Nashville show got moved bc the pre-sale didn't go as well as their management wanted but it ended up being too small a venue and was super packed. seems like the same is happening here.

Seeing them next Sunday. They were my last show before everything shut down last year, excited to hear the new stuff live. It’s been too long since I’ve seen Touché too.

I absolutely love the ending of still life at "just let go", it's like a dizzying fall and utterly sublime.

ETA: I got a vinyl delay email this week as well.

I think you accidentally made my point. My taste in music doesn't generally align with those of 14 year old kids. More often than not we seem to like different things, and there's nothing wrong with that. With that in mind, I think you can see how it can be incredibly disappointing to me (and others) when they suddenly write a song that caters to that audience.

I don't blame Thrice for making the song, but why am I not allowed to dislike it without "hating" every other repetitive song? Just because two songs are repetitive doesn't mean they are equal. There's more to it than that and it's pretty disingenuous to suggest otherwise. There's a huge gap in songwriting between Black Honey and Hold Up A Light.

And also as a member of the international audience it's a bit insulting to kind of suggest that we'd want simpler lyrics because English is not our native language lmao

PS. It's a lot easier to see if your post is aimed at me if you use the quote function.

I have been digging most the song so far, I haven't listened to the album a whole lot yet but like most Thrice records the more I listen the better it will be

Songs that try and go the anthematic route are often simple and repetitive. This makes it inclusive to people of different ages, levels of sophistication and people of different languages.

Queen’s We Will Rock You is repetitive and even features a line about playing kick the can which is very juvenile. That band had many complex songs with layered meanings. It’s ok to pull out anthem every now and again. They also go over well at shows around the world.

That said, We Will Rock you is famous and great song and Hold Up A Light is subpar from a great band and missed the mark. I don’t think it’s bad, but the Anthematic moment on The Dark is better.

Dislike what you want though and it’s really ok to disagree.

Hold Up A Light is a fun song. i like busy songs and complex lyrics. i also like simple songs with catchy lyrics and melodies. its cool to see a band i put on a high pedestal for entries like Vheissu tackle something more accessible. in fact, HUAL is one of my favorite songs of the record and it does a fantastic job leading into Blood On Blood. I also think its unfair to say there's a gap in songwriting between one song and the other as I think it shoehorns the artistic integrity and meaning behind writing in the first place. I would even argue that the repetition of the lyric is a stylistic choice that's meant to represent the triumphant hope of the lyrics, a la word painting. You're not going to hold up a light, against all types of adversity, for a brief second; you're going to carry that shit all night "until the morning comes", so the repetition reflects on how courage needs be constant to be successful. Also, lyrics don't need to be complex to be good; some of my favorite entries from the bands I like are succinct. HUAL has a good metaphor, message, and is just all around fun. It's a good entry to the band's catalogue imo

Random thoughts after getting caught up on this thread after not having checked it since release day:

    1) Horizons is definitely my favorite of the post reunion albums just edging out TBEITBN. I'm still not 100% sure where it will rank in their discography for me, but I'd probably put it on par with Beggars which is mid-tier Thrice to me. Not gonna bother posting a full ranking since I don't want to drag that up with rankings that'll probably diverge a bit from the rest of this site.

    2) Seeing them tomorrow, and it's my first bigger show post lockdown so I'm simultaneously excited and a bit nervous, but I've promised the wife that I'll be masked the entire time and the venue is vaxxed only as of 10/1 (that probably being the only good thing AXS/Bowery Presents has ever done) so it's at least in the best environment all things considered.

    3) Hold Up A Light is one of the better songs on Palms. Also, it produced that Hold A Bud Light meme here for a bit which I all for too.

I feel like that’s a great description of Hold Up A Light.

It gets stuck in your head pretty easily. I love how he continues to use light and dark as metaphors in his music (Thrice and solo). The song is designed to be anthematic. I prefer a song like Beyond The Pines, but I don’t skip Hold Up A Light and the I think the dislike for it has taken on it’s own life like “play Deabolt”. Deadbolt is a cool song, but honestly their discography has a so many great songs you could want to hear from them live without just picking out that one song.

Not to look to far ahead, but when did they expect Horizons/West to come out? I don’t think it was done recording, but are expecting this time next year potentially?

I am also wondering if everyone considers East to be experimental, breaking through with new sound...will West revert back to something more familiar? Not that I have a preference, just curious.

Other than some newer jazzy elements, I don’t find this record too experimental for Thrice since they always seems to experimenting with things to varying degrees on records post TAITA.

West may have stuff to differentiate a bit from East, but I don’t think it has to be anything to crazy. There’s a lot of familiar Thrice on Horizons/East too. I think they just tried to give things more breathing room on more songs.

One thing that i had hoped/wanted in the past was them to make another Vheissu-ish sounding record. Moreso in a production sense though. I remember when they were making it/it came out they said “it had a cinematic feel to it” or something that could be scored to a movie/“epic”

i don’t think that production would necessarily fit their sound now, especially with how Dustin’s voice has grown. I feel like this is the closet it’s been to something like that. Still raw like Beggars but big moments like that, with giving the music more “space” like the previous comment said. I remember at the end of the IWCOSUN DVD Ed was saying something to the effect of their music up until AITA seemed rigid and wanted it to be more free flowing. I feel like with Horizons it’s flowed more loosely compared to their last few efforts if that makes sense?

edit: I think this is the best sounding they’ve been production wise in a long time. Took the record for a listen for a drive last night and just hit a good chord with me. Sorry for the long incoherent rambling lol

They were excellent last night. It's impossible to please everyone with a set list with how big their discography is now, but it was really, really good. They definitely put a lot of thought into the flow of the set.

    Fight the long defeat.

Last night they gave as good a performance as I've seen from them, if not the best, out of five shows I've caught over the years. Absolutely excellent from start to finish (except for Teppei's guitar not coming through during the first song, ha).

The new record is certainly my favorite of theirs since the hiatus. Its production is equal parts in-the-room raw and calculated beauty. Really grateful they've continued making music.

The only downside to last night was seeing them moved to a smaller venue, which was maybe two thirds full. A great, intimate chance to see them, but I hope touring continues to make financial sense in the long run. Gotta believe it's the Covid impact keeping people away, for the most part.

Yeah, I'm up in Raleigh and in non-Covid times would've made the drive for the show, but with unvaccinated kids at home that's just not a risk I'm up for.
