The margin between these songs is so thin for me. I was trying to pick my favorite songs on the album and 5 songs came to mind, which is half the album lol.

I think it’s cool people have different favourites. Kind of means that the whole album has something to offer without people honing in one or many songs as weak ones or filler. Kind of the objective of album bands I think.

Hello there! Just wanted to drop this in here: Thrice – Horizons/East Hope everyone is having a good week, and I've already heard from some readers that I need a higher/lower rating on this one. :worried:

    roamer. wanderer. nomad. vagabond.

    lazy ranking:

badass: color in the sky, dandelion wine, robot soft exorcism, northern lights
aight: unitive east, summer fire rain, scavengers
not right now: the dreamer (opening lyrics remind me of a simpsons episode: the opening theme to the little miss springfield pageant and now i CAN'T UNHEAR IT), buried in the sun (awesome music, uninteresting lyrics), still life (compared to the rest of the album, too long to get to the first verse.

to be fair, most albums fall under a cycle of emotions in my life. for reasons unbeknownst to me, i've been in an aggressive mood, and the new spiritbox album is filling that need quite nicely. come winter, i'll probably be all over this like i was with palms.

Palms is really growing on me too...especially after seeing where they were taking their sound on this album.

After listening for a week, I think Still Life is the only song I don't fully love (still good). The Dreamer has grown to be my favorite for the time being after initially thinking it was a weak spot on my first listen.

Still Life is now my second favorite song behind the masterful THE DREAMER.

This is your life, are you who you want to be?

It's funny i'm the complete opposite right now with these two albums. We've all been waiting for that spiritbox album and it came to me at completely the wrong time. I'm hoping that will hit with me later this year. Absolutely loving this Thrice album though.

Just a few things I hear.

There is a section near the end of Dandelion Wine that reminds me so much of the end of Beggars.

The start of Scavengers reminds me of Image of The Invisible.

Intro to Buried In the Sun reminds me of Cataracts at half speed.

There are more too without things feeling recycled in anyway. I think it’s awesome because it feels like a director using a trademark shot at the right time. Really cool record.

Still Life's last minute and a half continues to give me chills. Album growing with every listen, still not super fond of The Dreamer, but I've been liking it more and more.

I've listened quite a few times and so far no way I can pick a favorite off the record. Each song is different enough, and fits a different mood. I guess that's a good sign

I think Palms would have a better reputation if they left "Hold Up A Light" off of it. Genuinely their worst song imo.

I'd probably take out "Everything Belongs" too.

Having Everything Belongs and My Soul back to back, in the middle of the record, wasn't their wisest choice.

But in a digital age you can move the track list.

Hold Up A Light is not even a bad song. Honestly, it is too safe and a little more radio rock then we come to expect from Thrice, but it’s like someone dug in on the track and everyone has jumped onboard. We have such high standards for this band. I’ve listened to this song and album enough to appreciate it for what it is. I don’t think Branch or Deeper Wells are there best hard songs either.

That's cool! I'm mainly talking about the low energy of those songs and how the record completely loses steam in the middle. I keep telling myself that Summer Set Fire, as a middle track, is a response to that.

I think it's more likely that people simply don't like it, myself included. I also think "too safe and a little more radio rock" really undersells how repetitive it is. I'm just not a fan when a lyric, any lyric, is repeated 34 times during three and a half minutes. That's not even counting the "hold ups". It's the opposite of what I like, and really takes me out of the song.

True, a lot of us have very high expectations but maybe the song just doesn't appeal to a lot of people. On the flip side, is it possible you're giving this song too much leeway because it's Thrice? Not to put words in your mouth, but I sincerely doubt you'd share the same sentiment if this song was release by another band.

I don't fault anyone for digging it, but it's not hard to see why a lot of people dislike it. Maybe it's a banger live, and I'll completely change my mind down the road... but I doubt it.

I love My Soul, and I like everything belongs very much. I can see the point, though.

I also like Bad Religion’s “Raise Your Voice”.

In both cases each band writes much better and more complicated song lyrics, but for the sake of writing a universally anthematic song which can go over well with international audiences (who are not always English as a first language), or be slipped onto a video game soundtrack or radio they went with something simple and repetitive, Hold Up A Light. It still fits Dustin’s normal writing themes and the delivery of the Chorus is performed in a very Thrice way. I also like Black Honey and it’s more repetitive too.

And if Hold Up A Light was the only song I had heard by the band it would not be enough to make me go check out a record. Inversely, a simple song like that may be enough for a 14 year kid to give the album/band a listen though. Thankfully being familiar with the band though for years I can get past the simplicity of the song and still listen to it.

You must hate the Happy Birthday song too.

I feel like Queen’s We Will Rock you is another anthematic repeating song too.

Can't call them faves, but I'm so satisfied with the slow/pretty/spacey to heavy progression in the duo Still Life and Dandelion Wine.

A vibe that I dont think I've felt as much since the lows to highs in Stand and Feel Your Worth
