As a huge fan of his previous films, I was disappointed by this. The characters were incredibly disjointed and the tone kept veering from one tone to another which isn’t always bad, but here I thought it was.

The ending was interesting, but overall I expected a better film.

The scene where: her daughter leaves and says she hopes she gets raped etc. has got to be one of the most tasteless and all around awful scenes I’ve ever seen in a film.

That's honestly the first thing that comes to mind whenever this movie comes up anywhere. Legit hate this movie the more I think about it

Just finished it for the first time. I enjoyed watching it, but I doubt I'll watch it again voluntarily. It fits in with a lot of "Oscar bait" movies in that they have great actors in them, great performances, intriguing storyline, etc... shit like that.

You like some, you hate some, but it is what it is. Glad I finally saw it so I could move onto the next on my list.

Also, Caleb Landry Jones rules. He’s awesome in everything I’ve seen him I except X-Men: First Class.

    Love that dude.

It just popped up on HBO streaming, so I imagine people will be talking about it again.

I haven’t thought about it independently since I saw it. Such an incredibly forgettable and useless film.

Yeah, I was surprised by how bland it was. From the trailers to all the awards it was nominated/won, I figured it looked like it could be some Coen brothers slice of life kind of movie.

Even if it had been the American In Bruges that it was kind of promoted as with really
complicated and awful people somehow managing to be charming and funny and touching that would have been great. But it totally missed in basically every way that that movie succeeded.

I had tempered my expectations tremendously after hearing about the backlash, but they still TOTALLY lost me when our dear protagonist dropped the n-bomb and it was played as if it was ok because she was taunting the cop with it. Just awful.

I watched In Bruges for the first time this year and liked it enough, but didn't really like Seven Psychopaths that back when it came out.

In Bruges is a top 10 film of all-time for me. Seven Psychopaths may be in my top 20.

This is a movie that I enjoyed when I saw it in the theater, but the more I thought about it I kind of realized what I liked about it was pretty hollow. I don't really have a desire to see it again, but I don't see it holding up well.

I still need to see In Bruges.

So. i know a lot of you will be like "do you live under a rock"... but i just dont pay much attention to film culture / awards shows / whatever. So me and my wife watched this today and i went in with ZERO bias. I had no idea there was so much controversy around it, i literally knew nothing.

These were my raw and uninfluenced thoughts during the film: I hate the use of the N word and the use of f**g*t in this movie. It was totally unnecessary. like listen, i get it. Its very obvious what kind of town this is / what kind of person this is using it. All you needed to do was tell me that buddy tortured a black man after he was already in custody and that pretty much says it all. The movie had white people alone with white people casually dropping the N word. i would never recommend this film to anyone because of how casually people were using the n word and f*g. It didnt serve ANY purpose. I GET IT. Im sitting there watching this thinking "even if this movie turns out to be decent by the end of it, i cant tell anyone to watch this movie because i dont want anyone thinking this is okay / thinking im okay with the way these people are talking". Its one thing when a film about racism / is trying to convey how evil racism is uses racist slurs - hopefully in that situation the audience is able to see like "oh wow, there is actually power behind words and you know what that is actually wrong to say".... but this wasnt even like that.

There was one point i dont even know what point, where i wanted to turn it off. I think when buddy threw the kid out the window. at that point i was just mad. from there things got less frustrating but still i couldnt get out of my head how uncomfortable i was with the language.

So it i was interesting reading this thread after, because i didnt even think about the redemption arc at all. i just thought it was racist because of unabashedly using the n word for no reason.

    Yes to all your points.

Ill also just keep bringing up the fact that theres a scene in which a mother tells her daughter she hopes she gets raped, which is just inconceivable to me.

I agree with all those points as well, but the usage of the n word is rampant and unfortunately common in lots of parts in this country. So as horrible as it is, that aspect was realistic.

My issue is that it was used in a provocative way and they tried to use it as a ground level for these characters to grow from, but the "growth" they had by the end of the film was so shallow that it was disrespectful.

I feel the same way about some of Tarantino's films. Just because using that word is historically accurate doesn't mean you have to use it unless there's some profound actual message behind it all.

Mad Men did an excellent job of displaying misogyny, racism, and sexism in the 60's and 70's in that it was portrayed accurately but was integral to the story and growth of the characters. And unless I'm not remembering correctly, they never used the n word once.

Well, Mad Men was subjected to limitations when it came to language on a basic cable network, though I'm not an expert of what's allowable. The one thing that kinda sticks out that played no purpose within an episode is Roger singing a song in blackface at a country club. His character wasn't defined with racist tendencies but I'm sure blackface was considered acceptable in parts of the country in the early 60s. But you are right in how it depicted those issues in the rest of the series.
