for anyone curious this is what the ending is referencing

(and in spoilers because an indiewire headline mentioning it gave away the ending to me months ago)

Best movie of the year. It’s also the best thing I’ve seen since AT LEAST 2019.

I got to visit Auschwitz and Auschwitz II-Birkenau during the summer of 2022. All I can say is this movie turned me sideways.

Not showing within 70 miles of here. Maybe it will expand more next weekend but it used to be a lock to be in the suburbs right after a Best Picture nomination.

I can only imagine how the time jump affected you

not sure if anyone else interpreted it this way, but I felt like that scene Rudolf actually saw what we saw, the future that happened. Yet he still “put on his cap” and proceeded, a bit of a 4th wall break

Ive seen and heard a few interpretations, and I’m not sure what I favor or how I feel exactly. I was thinking about the day of the tour constantly while watching (I truly think about it all the time), so that jump to the future really was a shock to me, it’s all very vivid still so I remembered each room they shot in. All I know that for me the ending really worked, I’m still trying to work through why exactly. I think I too believe Hoss saw the future, a part of him (even if he’s not conscious of it), the part that was getting sick in the stairwell, and realizes that their war will be lost, they will stand on the wrong side of history, that what he will be remembered for is the extermination of a people. But alas, he holds his vomit down, and continues his descent, back to Auschwitz, back to hell. It’s denial, more compartmentalizing, more evil.

Also probably sick from breathing the air around Auschwitz every day for 4 years, but I believe this all ties together with what I said above.

I agree with your interpretation and think that moment works much better if that’s the case. And it’s the moment that really throws the entire movie back in our face and holds the mirror to us. It draws the parallel to our complacency with the atrocities that occurred, and even draws a classist line to the comforts we enjoy off the backs of those less fortunate than us. It didn’t get lost on me that the workers at the museum correlate to the local girls who work in the house - lower class people who work in the system due to their class status and having to confront those atrocities every day. While I, 1,000 miles away on the comfort of my couch, think about the holocaust in a historical context, only every so often. It’s such a quick, yet affecting, sequence and without it, the movie doesn’t make its abstract as explicit as it does then. Powerful stuff that I’ll be thinking about for a long time. Especially seeing the rise of fascism in the last 10 years.

Seems more clear now that the thermal tech they used to film the polish girl hiding apples was used as a contrast to the evil, that she was energy and heat. A human.

When I saw the movie last night my interpretation was similar but also somewhat different. Coupled with the score that plays over those scenes (if I’m remembering correctly), it all felt more alien. As if these acts of kindness were so at odds with everything we had seen, everything that was going on in and around the camp, that the only way to capture this stark shift in humanity was to film it like it was completely foreign and detached from everything else.

I expanded a little on my thoughts on Letterboxd. I’m not much of a writer but felt inclined to write a little on this one. I realized yesterday that Christian Friedel played The School Teacher in The White Ribbon, a movie I thought about a lot while watching this.

Multiple local theaters show this expanding the first week of March. What an idiotic rollout when it is playing in bigger cities for over a month. If it leaks they deserve it.

Do not understand the rollout either. I mean, maybe they are thinking it has no shot to win best pic so just get eyeballs on it around the show. But seems to me it should be full bore like this weekend. Nothing else out there.
