Some of the topics in here have a tendency to go south quickly in discussing, so try to stay civil, guys. There was a report warning us that it seemed to be on a slippery slope. I'm not looking to give anyone a hard time, just be cool. Thanks!

My two cents: Mentalities like that (all cops are bastards/kill all pigs) are the reason I decided not to pursue my life goal of being a police officer or intelligence agent. It honestly terrifies me that it is a prevailing school of thought.

The cops being a racist institute terrifies me. But I'll leave it there.

That is what I meant yeah, apologies if it didn't come off as such.

A lot of the rhetoric seemed to have come directly from the guitarist who is no longer in the band, and the singer. The singer told a fan or something of the like that he hopes they have a kid and it rots and dies and their family burns in hell for having a "pro cop" attitude. I'll see if I can track down where I saw that. EDIT: In the reddit link posted someone commented an imgur album with that stuff in there.

i don't believe every single cop is inherently bad (though choosing to be part of a racist establishment rubs me the wrong way) but i would never get on anyone, especially those in harder situations than myself, for believing this.

Personally I think it's a little unnecessary as a moderator to come in and basically alienate the other side of this conversation by saying those that have a, rightfully founded, mindset of being afraid of police are somehow the bad guys.

but it's okay for mods in other threads encourage the other viewpoint?

i don't have an issue with mods expressing either sides of the argument, but it's also kinda wrong to say that being a mod strips you of contributing to a civil conversation

Mods can have opinions that are opposing views.

I don't think he alienated anyone by saying the rhetoric of calling for violence and murder by asking all cops to blow their brains out is scary. It is. And agreeing with that or saying that doesn't automatically negate those who are rightfully afraid of police abuse of power.

  11. I don't disagree. Mods can have opinions. I would, however, say that it's counter-productive and more than a little confusing to caution people on pursuing a combative topic and then adding a proverbial log to the fire by taking a stance on it in the same breath. My two cents.

If a mod had taken the other side of this argument I would feel the same way. The difference is real people are harmed mentally and physically by police, those people tend to be minorities, and while I don't believe all cops are evil I do believe all cops are participating in a broken, racist organization that has statistically shown to do more harm than good to minorities. The extremists that think all cops should die aren't just saying that to say it, they're saying it because they've seen the damage that institution has done. It may be an extreme reaction, but so is shooting an unarmed black man for wearing a hoodie.

I myself am a queer person who has had rough confrontations with police because I'm not one to hide I'm queer. I paint my nails, I'm not exactly masculine, etc. Cops have been very aggressive towards me but my experience doesn't compare to a PoC. I have many friends who are latinx or black that are scared to death of cops because of how they've been treated. I think it's wrong to say that you're scared of some comments made by people on the internet when actual real people are actually armed by police. Again, I accept that not all cops are like that, I have some in my immediate family, but it's still not right to downplay the plight of minorities or somehow compare a band or a person saying "cops should blow their brains out" on the internet to tangible damaging instances of police brutality. But that's just my two cents and I don't want to stifle this conversation or anything I think it's a good one to have.

I think minorities are terrified just at the sight, or even thought, of cops, so I honestly couldn't care less about you coming in here trying to settle people down just to turn around and talk about how you wanted to become a cop/agent but were too frightened at this "prevailing school of thought," when there's is another prevailing school of thought going around where minorities are unfairly judged by police every single day

All cops are crooked. Every time a cop does something wrong there's however many cops watching it and not saying a word. The thin blue line is the most intense no snitch policy of any group in the world

I don't think anyone is trying to say that there aren't grave issues of police brutality and abuse of power, but generalizing a group of people and inciting violence seems like a waste of time and attention.

Asking all cops to blow their heads off, wishing children to rot and die, and wishing families to burn in hell, all because someone doesn't want to celebrate police deaths, I just can't see how that does any of the minority groups currently oppressed by police departments any good at all.

Sure on the surface the idea that all cops are terrible can be off putting, but if you put any amount of critical thought into why someone might think that it's really not hard to understand why people think that. The institution of policing is racist, oppressive, and extremely corrupt. So many people, typically of minority communities but also even in white communities (poor white communities to be sure) have had their lives ruined and even taken away by police and a justice system that favors money and the privileged

Generalizing a whole group of people and inciting violence is what cops do. Again, some comments on the internet aren't comparable to actual kids and families that are harmed by police. I understand what you're saying, I really do, but the police are a systemic, oppressive organization and naturally those choosing to associate with that are viewed as crooked by some

It comes with the job. Cops who aren't crooked and don't play along wind up fired or relegated to a desk where they can't make a difference.

Again, I'm not saying there are not issues. But not every single cop in this country is corrupt, regardless of how much people would like that to be true.

Maybe this is just where we plateau our conversation? I think you have some great points, disagree with some, but get what you are saying just the same.

Love this little duality of content we have going between this and Overwatch.
