So then why call someone out on their interpretation being a a stretch?

I mean, that's a technicality with different boundaries. Both can be true. If we stopped at "every piece of writing means whatever you want it to mean" we wouldn't do literary analysis, at all. There's the personal interpretation, and then there's the analysis that pushes towards (impossible) objectivity. A personal interpretation can be correct (because who's gonna tell you how YOU feel about a song)... and still be a stretch as a general analysis.

e.g : for me There, There mirrors my experience of having autism, it correlates and fits exactly. So, for me, it's about autism. Does that mean Dan has autism and he wrote a song about it? No. I mean, if he does all the power to him but that would just be a wild stretch on my part.
That's what I mean when I say "every song means whatever the listener wants it to mean".

i mentioned it to be self-deprecatory because ppl with lit degrees are usually pretentious as hell about interpretation and kings of the stretch, having one doesn't give me any authority whatsoever lol. chill.

I mean, is calling something a stretch the worst possible thing that could happen? Didn't leerkat also get mocked a bit for how in depth the genius annotations were?

    Too many hurt feelings, yall

The WNDR thread birthed some pretty shitty people/mindsets. I'm glad most of the people who stuck around grew up a bit. At the very least this thread is focused on the music of the band.

For a long time I was afraid to post in that thread because of some entitled people. Once Chorus.fm started it felt okay to post in again.

Instead of being pointed and sarcastic in my retorts I’m gonna try to and be honest and give some insight on where I’m coming from instead.

I’m someone who consciously silences myself and second guesses everything I say or do. I hold back like half of the things I wanna say or post, for every post I do make there’s two or three I deleted. This comes from past experiences of being mocked and teased and bullied, among other more personal traumas I don’t feel like divulging to internet strangers. So when I actually do follow through with a post and put myself out there, it hurts more than it probably should when it’s met with a response like the one being discussed. I don’t say any of this to gain sympathy points, and I don’t think it’s anyone’s duty to treat me with kiddie gloves, nor do I really want them to. I do think maybe people are a little too immediately inclined to resort to ridicule, mockery, and general other forms of negative interaction via the Internet tho, and this goes in all directions.

I’m over-sensitive and I won’t deny that. It’s in my nature to be self-conscious, have low self-confidence, and just all around feel like what I have to say is unimportant. That is something I’m acutely aware of and have people point out about me all the time and I’m consciously trying to work on it tbh. It’s hard to not get in my feelings and feel justified in being wired how I am when situations like this happen but it’s something I’m trying to learn to work through. I think venting and being honest helps me with that.

Sorry if I wasted any of y’all’s time. I really wasn’t anticipating this to turn into a *thing*.

the bird hiding in a ribcage also seems to tie back to A Raindance In Traffic with the "panicked and absent, like a bird in a cage" albeit as a very loose connection
