i love ADU but i won’t allow this

  2. Sorry your eyes haven't been opened yet Patrick

  3. Deeper Understanding was the perfect record for me at the perfect time, nothing more complicated than that honestly

This is me as well. It’s by far my favorite but I get why it’s not the consensus.

I also think A Deeper Understanding is a stronger album than Lost in the Dream, though they’re both amazing, obviously.

  6. Whoa thought you were the opposite.

Yeah both records and the live album are basically perfect so it's almost silly to distinguish

Nah, I think I was on the ADU train pretty much right away. I think my three favorite War on Drugs songs are all on that record.

Same although I'm dead serious the title track from this might already be top 3

  9. When I think about the old days, babe
    You're always on my mind
    I know it ain't like I remember
I guess my memories run wild
Like when we went to see Bob Dylan
    We danced to Desolation Row
But I don't live here anymore
But I got no place to go

I mean come on. And that synth riff?? Not fair.

I must have listened to "Thinking of a Place" a million times at this point and somehow it never gets old. I'm just always in awe of it. Definitely my favorite track. Probably followed by "In Chains" or "Eyes to the Wind."

  13. Same. Listened to it for the first time ever on a walk on a cold day and I will always remember exactly where I was when it got to the "See it through my eyes / Walk me to the water" section. Chills down the spine.

“Change” is solid, I agree with the Stereogum review that it’s pretty much a song Granduciel could put out in his sleep at this point, but luckily they said it’s the weakest song in the record which means my expectations are absurdly high.

  15. Yeah I mean if "Change" is the worst song on here then like...holy shit

I'm new to this band (hi friends!) -- where do y'all suggest I start? Absolutely /digging/ the new tracks.

Lost in the Dream, though Deeper Understanding I think is a little more accessible.

These 3 songs are all easy entry points from Lost in the Dream…

    “Under the Pressure”
    “Red Eyes”
    “An Ocean Between the Waves”

thank you, kindly. I'm listening now. What am I looking for here? What do people really like about this group and this record?

Listening to the new album, definitely good and on par with the other albums, but I do feel like nearly every single song is.... basically the same. I guess that's the band's thing, but it really all feels like variations on a single theme

  23. Any other Boss fans get momentarily confused by how similar the strumming pattern at the beginning of "Living Proof" is to the first song on Letter to You?

I think there are a few curveballs on this record, namely "Living Proof" and "Victim." I think the songs are little less melodically distinct on this record than they were on the last album, though, so maybe that's contributing to some of the sameyness you're feeling.

Victim was definitely the standout to me, and I really like the title track although I really don't like how Lucius's vocals sound on the song, sorrryyyy. Overall I do like it though, and yeah it's just a lot of similar long brooding repetetive melodies, which is great, but a lot in a row meshes together a lot
