    Song by song:

    • This is not Utopia: Fast, modern, typical opener, title seems to be kind of the concept for the record (critique of american society)

    • Let the bad times roll: has a ska vibe, contrast between happy sounds with critical lyrics, reminds him of REM, he likes that the song is different from the rest of the records (I guess this is good news for a lot of you)

    • Behind the walls: modern punk, kind of thoughtful and dark, reminds him of Rise Against, great song

    • Army of One: His favorite, great guitar, fast, amazing chorus

    • Coming for you / breaking these bones: sound like oldschool offspring, not as modern as the first four tracks

    • We never have sex anymore: the funny song they usually have on their records, kinda ska with brass instruments

    • Hall of the mountain king: the classical song, 1 minute long and grows faster with time, maybe a critique of elitist music? He‘s not sure why this is on there.

    • Opiod diaries: His least favorite on the record, kind of a mix between old and new Offspring

    • Hassan Chop: the fastest track, starts hardcore style and continues oldschool offspring, cool song

    • Gone away requiem version: His favorite offspring song of all times, slow version with piano and strings, he absolutely loves it

    • Lullaby: Outro, like a let the bad times roll reprise, doesn‘t count as a song

    Things have changed.

So a bunch of old retreads and "not real songs" – real good work, guys.

Dunno where he gets the REM vibe from Let the Bad Times Roll...

    It'll be OK.

Define what a "bunch" means? I count 1.

    Things have changed.

"Coming For You" was released in 2015. "We Never Have Sex Anymore" was written for Americana. "Gone Away" is obviously an old song. "Hassan Chop" has elements floating around for decades, apparently. If you have to dig into ideas that are like 20 years old to round out a 12-song album – plus an interlude that's a minute long – that's a big YIKES from me.

    I hope I like a song or 2. That’d be a success for me.

Seems like a pattern. What was Greg's on Welty getting kicked out? Sucks this happened to him too. Guess Noodles is next.

Obviously Dexter will have his own story of events but this is further evidence for my theory that Dexter (and by extension The Offspring) were just... never meant to be as famous as they are. They had some big hits and ended up playing big arenas but that doesn't mean they were equipped to be a "big band".

Dexter's a great musician and he's written some great songs but there are clear issues behind the scenes, the band's output - or lack thereof - since the 2000s is clear proof of that. Some bands are meant to last for years and years and then break up once the members get too old to keep going, some bands are able to reinvent themselves constantly, but some bands aren't, and I think the Offspring are in the latter category. They exist now because of nostalgia for the hits they wrote many years ago and their popularity behind the scenes, but they're not actually very good at doing the day-to-day business of writing albums any more because they ran out of ideas a long time ago.

Tl;dr The Offspring are the punk rock version of The Simpsons
