Bore witness to some serious white fragility from my family this week:

My boss announced two weeks ago that she's leaving at the end of this month. A coworker and I were both asked to apply to replace her (we're good friends, so we talked about it during the process even though our boss obviously approached us separately). I have been on staff for a year or so now, am a white man, have done really well in my position, and think I would be good at this job. My coworker has been on staff for four years, is a black woman, has done really well in her position, and I think would also be really good at this job. She was offered the position, which I am completely cool with and honestly figured would/should happen. It was explained to me that she simply had more experience with the office than I do. This is a completely legitimate reason to offer one person a promotion over another--in fact, I would be a little confused and concerned if I had gotten it over her.

Today, my grandparents and parents asked me what the latest was on my application. I told them that they offered the position to my coworker. Like clockwork, they were saying that it was because she's a woman, or because she's black. There is no room for their white grandson/son to get passed up for a job in favor of a woman of color unless it's due to affirmative action.

I've come to the conclusion that "quota" is old white folk for "cuck".

 

i can only very very very vaguely understand this, so i cannot translate. but she is discussing how people on her instagram are commenting on her photos saying things such as "you're pretty for a black girl", and it's not a compliment to say that.

 

So recently I ventured into Reddit (I know) and browsed through this subreddit called Asian Identity and at first I thought it was okay but then I was like, yep... this is reddit.

Also the other day me and my friend were talking about how white boys stay wanting to fight him.

I haven't stopped thinking about this movie, and this piece is really enlightening. Spoilers obviously if you haven't seen it yet.

Anybody else feel like the field of psychology is kinda racist?

Specifically when it comes to being labeled a "non-conformist"....which is cited as a symptom of a number of disorders that range from "sucks for you" to "holy shit, for the good of society you need to be locked up forever" in severity.

Maybe, just maybe, some people from other cultures didn't fully understand western societal norms and/or refuse to abandon their culture, were punished in one way or another for it, and developed perfectly understandable and rational resentments about that.

Telling those people who might theoretically exist that they're somehow broken and in need of serious repair may well cause more hurt than help....just a sleep deprived thought.

 

it depends on the individual researcher/psychologist/etc. as the field has modernized it's done a good job of sticking with sociology to get a better perspective on how the mind and social structures interact. so there's usually a ton of overlap that helps mitigate shortcomings, and often a good deal of curriculum is dedicated to cultural awareness. but a ton of factors go into actual practice that i think prevents us from making a reasonable claim that the entire field is without redemption (or beyond reproach).

that said, it's far from immune to social prejudices - for instance, black and latinx patients are disproportionately diagnosed with psychotic disorders - that is, they get diagnosed with more "extreme" disorders more easily.

cracked had a pretty good piece about the biases, including national, that we can bring into international treatment, too. can't find it, though.

I srsly can't stop stewing on this. Like this is why convos get so impossible, cause oppressors act like victims when the oppressed try to speak out. She accused a poc of villanizing and attacking white ppl when he did nothing of the sort. He literally said that he has had times where he's wary or distrustful of groups of white ppl which I think is totally fair. But even if it wasn't fair, he went on to say that he now disagrees and thinks he was judging unfairly and need to meet ppl with compassion. Like his whole thing was the opposite of villanizing white ppl. Then the white woman has the AUDACITY to say he shouldn't be speaking about cultural sensitivity issues. Like clearly u only wanna hear that which suits u and gives u a pat on the back. I've whined about how this man's lecture was received so many times on here and it was months ago lol but I'm still SO mad that his lecture was wasted on ppl who learned nothing.

The worst part is that I don't even bring it up. It was a training we had months ago and ppl are so pressed over it they bring it up all the time and I have to seethe all over again
