I'm bothered by the fact that I forgot about the 90's church fires. I know we were all young but that's something that should be burned into my brain by now. In the article when it talks about self care it reminded me of what Franchesca Ramsey, you might know her from CNN and decoded on mtv, said yesterday on her snapchat. She is going to have to pay for someone else to run her Facebook for her and delete Twitter from her phone bc of self care and the fact that not only are poc physically attacked but they are bullied and attacked on social media as well. It made me take a long hard look at the fact that poc are not safe anywhere whether it be IRL or online. Thank you for the article.

If the Bill of Rights is clear it's odd that people are debating the meaning of the 2nd amendment

2.5: it's just derivative racist scumbag music.

Anyway, nation-states have histories. Rewriting the laws won't change the dynamics that exist, and continue to exist, in the afterlife of enslavement, patriarchy and genocide. That is to say, the very assertion of laws or authority always-already soaked with the blood and sweat of people of color.

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

it will be interesting to discover if Micah Xavier Johnson left anything indicating why he did this and / or what else he said to police during the stand off. was he doing it specifically for the gross killings earlier in the week by cops? was he doing it to try and start a race war or a war against police / government? did he feel he was helping BLM? did he choose Dallas because it was close to where he lived or was there another reason?

    so many questions.

I just find it hard to believe that anything will come out of a violent stance other than more fear and hate for the black community, which could lead to more black slayings as well as possible civilian casualties. I would guess that, for a lot of people, the BLM movement would lose a lot of legitimacy because of that. Not saying that that would be the right reaction, just that I would expect most people to blame the black community for that more than the oppressive white community.

Either way, its a horrifying thing that people have been driven far enough that they see this as their only option. Change needs to happen but I don't know how to help

this is sadly what i think will happen. a large majority, like usual, will read only headlines and come away with, "black man kills cops during BLM protest" which will have a certain group more prejudice than ever and some cops more on edge than ever when encountering black men/women and BLM protests which will only continue what we've already seen with no major changes or solutions found.

I'm actually feeling somewhat positive. Yes, this week has been a travesty, but I dunno... turning point maybe? I could just be feeling unusually optimistic.

Don't presume to tell me what I want or do not want. I take notice of the fact that this is always how things devolve when a black person offers up a radical critique for change. It is about revenge, it is pure anger, it is this or that. To that I would say, no, the call for organized violence is about about change, it is about forcibly destroying the mechanisms that destroy us. There are people within the black lives matter movement who prefer peaceful methods and they are welcome to their beliefs, but as I said earlier, we've been engaging in peaceful actions for centuries and it has not yielded anything but what we've seen in those videos two days ago. Ask yourself, what did it take to end slacery? How much death had to happen before civil rights? How many people had to die in prison before mass incarceration became a term uttered by those in the halls of power? You can lecture me all you would like about why my position is bad, but the default position right now remains one in which we are being killed every twenty-eight hours and you have no answer for that. So, how many black people are going to have to die in the interim? Tell me. What would be a sufficient number of our dead bodies that would provide a moral high ground, on which liberal progress can proceed?I honestly would like to know. How many times do we have to turn the other cheek? You say that I just want violence, however, what you're proposing to me is to just endure. You're arguing for us to endure more, and do nothing about it. You reflect on history as though it has been a steady march towards progress. Well, the same Supreme Court that made gay marriage legal also gutted civil rights protections at the voting booth. I, and others like me, are tired of enduring. We've been enduring for all of our lives. When is enough enough? When will you actually be on our side? When will you not say, "this can be reformed" and begin to say "this needs to be destroyed?" Because, from my perspective, what we are seeing is a slow-motion genocide. In any other situation, there is a call for intervention. In this case, we are told to wait. Have lead in your water? You children will be fine. No one will be held accountable. Wait a moment. A hurricane destroyed your city and you have no means of escape? Wait five days. We will be there soon. Banks got you with predatory lending? We'll bail them out. Cops murdering you? You need to wait, march maybe, but please don't do anything rash. Please wait for civil society to recognize you as human. The problem is, this civil society is built upon us not being human, so how in the fuck can we reform it? Moreover, what obligation do we have to you or to this civil society that aims to hurt us on every level? Please tell me. I would like to know. Because you seem to think there is something worth saving in this anti-black, anti-woman, anti-trans and gay world. I do not. It needs to be destroyed and rebuilt. If you honestly believe this can be done by means of peace, then you clearly have never had struggle for any of your basic humanity, because they hold on to their power like a vice grip.

Believing that those in power will just willingly release said power without there being a legitimate threat against them is utopian at best

My opinion on this is there should be less white people in here telling poc how to react to their oppression. Particularly in this thread, which should be a place for poc to freely speak as they see fit.

We don't understand what the fight is like, so we shouldn't force our voices into the conversation to criticize the people who are literally fighting for their lives. Just shut up and read sometimes, fellow white people.

Coming from my background, I feel very uncomfortable reading through here. It's been difficult sorting out the many ideas and feelings others have shared but it has provided me with a perspective I would have absolutely no access or relation to otherwise. I am absolutely unqualified to really weigh in on any of this yet, aside from the tired, "it's sad and upsetting" or "this should never happen". It saddens me to my core that in 2016 horrible things like this have become a common statistic. It should not happen to anyone. It is deplorable, but I am at a complete loss on how to fix things.

I appreciate those in here sharing what they have. I can honestly say I am looking at everything related to these issues differently than when I first woke up this morning.
