I'm not one to advocate for violence, but it's plain to see why Dominick calls for it given just how helpless and repetitive this cycle is.

Fellow white men bending over backwards to justify every unjust shooting certainly does little to refute such a call to action.

Even if we're not conscious of it on a national level, we reinforce it time and again on a local one. Just look at Nextdoor, a social media site that lets you complain to people in your immediate neighborhood. Instead of a community message board, it often becomes a festival of white and middle-class narcissism and paranoia – petty grudges and dog-whistling anxieties from commenters for whom life is an Odyssey of minor inconveniences escalating toward apocalypse – like a microcosm of everything unbearable about America.

Yet we don’t want our own infractions acknowledged. If we complain to the cops, over and over, about kids from other neighborhoods parking on the corners and talking on Friday nights, they send more cars to patrol the streets. Then a week later, there’s a chorus of rage and lamentations about the dozens of citations left on the windshields of neighbors who parallel park too close to stop signs or against the flow of traffic. We want all our privileges granted and our burdens lifted, shunted to some other neighborhood We Don't Want To Know. Strangers come from there; theft comes from there; harassment comes from there, and all of it can go back.

Excellent piece, amazing that Rolling Stone is more cognizant than nearly every other major media outlet.

White Person: "Keep all Muslims out of the country, they are extremists and ISIS supports"
POC: "You cannot group all Muslims as extremists because of a small percentage of actual extremists."

    POC: "Kill all cops."

It's not the right solution and you know it. This needs to be stopped by the government.

I'm not a POC, but I think social dynamics have shown that white people wanting to keep out Muslims is not the same as POC fighting violence with violence. POC have been abused and killed for centuries by white people.

White America at large can't be bothered to give a fuck is the point. Time and again we see this violence exposed and what comes of it?

Cops getting a paid vacation and a return to business as usual. Look at the general resentment to Black Lives Matter from the public at large to see how little White America cares, the root of that being apathy, hate, or fear of the other.

It's easier to castigate the "other" as responsible for this slaughter than truly contemplate what exactly our role is in all this.

  16. Hey I'm not able to write a real response to this right now but I wanted to say quickly that the post you quoted was way more confrontational/cheeky than I meant it to be. Just wanted to make the point that nonviolence is met with violence anyway. My bad, thanks for responding less annoyingly than my post warranted

If someone wanted to find Peter Gelderoos' "How nonviolence protects the state" and link it here I'd appreciate it, I'd post if I wasn't in a hurry. I've linked here and the leftist thread before

The trouble is all the 65 year old racist old white people who are still in office. Congress needs change, they need someone in there that isn't afraid to but their foot down for what they believe it when it comes to cops murdering people. It's out of control.

    A bit off-topic
I love how that Gelderoos' piece quotes Defiance, Ohio.

Gonna give that a read a bit later today.

It is institutional. There is no such thing as a good cop.

To your analogy, it is flawed precisely because the relations of power are so overwhelmingly against people of color. They support white supremacy. They have to be gotten rid of.

Aside from that, you speak about a race war, as if it isn't occurring already. You are in a privileged position to ask, "why do want a race war?" The war has been going on for centuries and we are the ones dying. Now, we are dying live on tape. What you are actually asking is,"why do you want to fight back?" The answer is obvious.

I used to think that with cellphone footage of these incidents becoming more commonplace people would actually wake up and question the reverence placed upon the police and the systems that enable them in this country.

    Boy, was I a fool.

Honestly, the people that deplore violence who see it as only eliciting more violence, I wonder whether they understand history and if they actually understand what they're proposing. You want people to march, protest, write letters, etc., much of which has been done by leaders in the past and they, too, were killed by white men that either were deputized by the state or were part of law enforcement.

I don't really know the right way to word this, and I'm only one section into the Gelderoos piece so forgive me if this comes off less diplomatically than intended. Is it unfair to ask whether violent activism is compatible with the better society said activism seeks? Essentially, if one thinks that killing innocents is morally wrong but also that the present situation is as well, what are they to think?

Ultimately I can understand why it isn't as simple as "two wrongs don't make a right" or "violence is not the answer." But from a place of privilege where those statements feel axiomatic, I can see why those who deplore violence are not swayed to the other side simply by the explanation that pacifism is ineffective in bringing change. I totally understand and apologize if this is an inappropriate time for that discourse, but I do imagine that those in here upset by talk of violent response being the only answer are asking those kinds of questions.
