Going to ask you the same question you asked cause i'm curious. He's coming through town in a couple weeks and I'm planning on going. How was it?

He was great and the opening band, The Wooks, were really cool too. He had a full band and played 25ish songs. I think only 7 of which were off Purgatory with a couple of covers thrown in as well.

Apparently he has a whole other full length I was not aware of?

Yeah I've listened to it a few times but that's good to know. I'll have to listen again so I'm a little more familiar with those songs. 25 songs seems like a lot.

Yeah I was surprised when I looked it up on setlist. Not much banter in between haha

hopefully that look of concentration is her finally figuring out how to have more than three good songs per album.

This is really solid. Reminds me of early Dawes.

This collection is aces so far:

@cshadows2887, the Vince Gill/Don Henley cover seems like something you will love.

It's the rare tribute comp I want to own in its entirety.

I really like that Dierks Bentley cover on the Elton John comp. Always been one of my favorite Elton John songs. Speaking of Dierks, I'm pretty pumped for his new album. All the teasers for it so far (as well as the Woman, Amen single) point toward it being another Up On the Ridge style record that showcases his traditionalist side.

I'm excited for it too. And he definitely nailed the Elton song. He's definitely hit or miss for me, but I hope this album skews toward the "hit" side. Riser has become one of my favorite country records from the last few years, even acknowledging that there are 2-3 songs that are a little dodgy.

Yeah, same here but even then? The "miss" side of his catalog is at least listenable. I agree about Riser too, and that record is a good example of how even when he's "miss" I can still begrudgingly enjoy it haha. (I'm mostly referring to "Drunk on a Plane" here, a song which is actually more enjoyable if you view it through the lens of it being a sad, bitter song disguised as an upbeat party anthem).

Ruston Kelly was just great opening for Brian Fallon in SF. He covered Teenage Dirtbag and said new album this fall.

Really enjoyed this piece on John Prine. I’m so happy to finally have a new album from him. I’m honestly surprised more people around here don’t seem to be that in to him.

    what a waste of wood

John Prine is easily one of my favorite songwriters. One of the most underrated of all time. A true musician's musician.

If it wasn't for JV and the cover below, I'm not sure I would've ever heard of him. The Bon Iver hosted John Prine cover set (which concluded with the man himself) is one of my all time favorite concert memories.

That being said, I haven't listened to the NPR stream yet. I'll do that today.

He is one of my absolute favorites also and his debut is probably one of my 10 favorite albums ever. Its so cool to see what a huge influence he has on some of the most popular artists in the genre right now such as Isbell, Simpson, Musgraves, and several others. I even saw him perform with Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys a few years ago, which shows his reach is much wider than just the country/americana world. I’ve also seen him covered by Dawes, Deer Tick, and probably even a few others over the years just randomly at shows I’ve been to. Artists seem to like to play John Prine songs when they role through Nashville which is interesting considering how many other legendary songwriters are associated with this town.

I love that Bon Iver cover too. I also love Josh Ritter’s version of Mexican Home and Jim James version of All the Best from that same album.
