New Old 97s album is good. There's a stronger country feel to several songs than I've heard from them before. "She Hates Everybody" is my current favorite

Hah it was fascinating. I feel better for having heard it.

The thing that makes Cash work for me is he will talk but he'll transition seamlessly in and out of singing as fits the song. "A Boy Named Sue" as probably the archetypal example.

The last two have felt like (admittedly interesting) stabs for variety and pop cred. So a bit of a return is nice.

"Beat Up Bible" has become another favorite of mine; I love how her voice drops off singing "in this beat up biiiibblllee" at the end of the first chorus, around 2:10 into the song - so beautiful

In my opinion nothing he's done since then has been as good as that album, but still some solid songs.

Just started listening to John Moreland's High on Tulsa Heat. Holy shit, this record is great. Idk why I was sleeping.

I like "It Don't Suit Me (Like Before)", doesn't stray too far from anything on High

The album isn't a huge departure, but it's definitely a different kind of record for him. High on Tulsa Heat is one of the saddest records in the world to me. Just so heavy all the way through. This one isn't exactly happy, but there are more upbeat tracks where he really locks into a cool groove with the full band. (Though there are still some great ballads, too.)

Sidenote: We're getting new Stapleton, Moreland, and Isbell in the space of a month and a half. What did we do to deserve this windfall?

And that Dave Cob-produced Zac Brown Band. You heard the singles off that yet? Curious what you think!

I was under the impression we were getting a new Isbell solo record, not a 400 unit full band release. Is he also writing for a new solo record or is this it?
