every time i see his name i think of Hyden’s piece saying he’s the closest to irl Jackson Maine and wanting him to do a neil young sounding album instead of what he actually does

I still love Mr. Misunderstood. Haven't gone back to Desperate Man a whole lot since 2018.

Oh I didn’t realize it was an opener/closer thing I thought it was more like a casual back and forth between them

Mr. Misunderstood was the album that got me back into country music (grew up listening to that trash about sexy tractors, thankfully outgrew it in college lol). I can still remember the first time I listened and thought "oh, this is really good" while listening to the first few songs, then Knives of New Orleans came on and blew my mind. I still love that album and play it regularly.

I understand the Morgan Wallen love now. Very palatable MOR radio country music, slight accent, melodically uncomplicated and well constructed. I can’t imagine listening to this for 90+ minutes myself but get how it would work as background music for some folks the same way Drake does for others.

Discovered a guy named Matt Jordan today. RIYL Will Hoge, Matthew Ryan, Brian Fallon, etc.

Also, this song is good, from an upcoming album produced by Sadler Vaden.

Morgan Wallen is more tolerable than most radio country guys (not a high bar to clear) and his Isbell cover is decent as covers go but he's still incredibly unremarkable.

I think he’s considerably more talented than most radio country guys, if only because he’s a much better singer. He also has better taste, judging by the Isbell cover and the Stapleton feature. I think his album is actually pretty good, though he took what could have probably been a great single LP and blew it up to truly unwieldy proportions.

tbh the mask/snl stuff kinda held me back from checking him out

Yeah, I just have no desire to try and take in that whole album lol. I tried out a few songs here and there but nothing really grabbed my attention enough to make me even want to try listening to it front to back. Maybe one day when I'm having a really slow day at work...

He's got potential, at least - I can see him maybe someday becoming someone I'll enjoy spinning. Which is more than I can say for shit like Sam Hunt or Walker Hayes.

Don’t know anywhere else to say this, but we need more artists like Marcus King.

Thank you for the heads up on this! I've been a fan of his since I saw him open for Brian Fallon a few years ago, but I had no idea this was released. This is phenomenal.
