I listened to way less metal this year than I did last year, but even I think that list is laughable

 

This year was pretty fucking boring for metal if I had to be real about it

 

ha, by contrast I've listened to an incredible amount of good new metal this year and browsing the various EOY lists I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface.

 

That’s fine, I personally found little to be that excited about this year in comparison to other genres

 

best things I've heard so far in my 2024 catchup efforts

1. absolutely sick French metal/hardcore (but not metalcore, to my ears)

2. epic old school heavy metal straight outta Spain

also very much enjoyed the Ingurgitating Oblivion record but that seems like much more of an acquired taste

 

I'll probably have a mixed genre list that'll have some metal on it posted next week as per usual - probably more hardcore than metal on it this year, but I'm too lazy to split it out tbh.

 

one more! black metal enjoyers should definitely check out this year's release from Verberis, ft. Ulcerate's drummer and the vocalist from Heresiarch

EDIT also special shout out to the LOTR themed, intensely dorky power metal band fellowship who completely won me over this year with their sheer ridiculous optimism

Giving the second to top spot to Judas Priest really feels like “I don’t listen to that many modern bands and I just had to give it to a legacy band just be because” energy.

 

Probably should be number 2 but I do think the new Judas Priest record kind of ruled. Good tunes.

 

I’ll have to check it out, I was never much into latter Priest so I skipped out on it.
