I never got into Oathbreaker. I get what they're trying to do, but I'm not a fan of the vocals - even though I think the vocals are one of the things that set them apart. I do think that seeing them live will change my opinion of them, but for now they're not my thing. Also I felt like Rheia was too damn long.

Incidentally, does anyone know of any comprehensive blacklist of bands that have NS/highly racist/openly bigoted beliefs and subject matter? Might seem a bit excessive, but as someone who's delving deeper into things like war metal and black metal lately it'd be nice to have a list of bands to avoid. I know separation of art from artist is a thing, of course, but for a queer person of Jewish descent, bands like that are a bit too much.

Have you ever listened to Funebrarum? They share (shared? Don't know anymore) members with Disma. I like them even more...their riffs are just as pummeling, but there's an extra layer of filth that the band exudes that makes them even grimier IMHO.

Always meant to listen to Funebrarum, but they're not on Spotify and I'm too lazy to use Youtube lol

New Dodecaherdron and Woe albums are pretty gnarly.

Saw Nails, Toxic Holocaust, and Gatecreeper last night and GOD DAMN were all three amazing.

Also, Todd Jones really loves saying fuck, goddammit, and slam a lot.

Most of the popular/acclaimed black metal bands are safe, but there's definitely some more popular BM bands with fascist sympathies. Graveland, Absurd, Goatmoon, Grand Belial's Key etc are the more notable ones. For the most part bands who openly preach or condone fascism are pretty apparent so it's easy to avoid them, especially with names like Aryan Blood, ha. Pretty much anything under the NSBM tag on last.fm.

Satanic Warmaster is another name that gets tossed around a lot and if you read the title/lyrics to a song like "My Dreams of 8", it's pretty sketchy. But 99% of his lyrics are about Satan/death/occultism/lycanthropy etc so he sort of falls into the same moral area as Burzum, in that people know he's an idiot, but still enjoy the bulk of his music as it's not about NS at all. Really up to you how much you want to tolerate.

I haven't but I'll make sure to check them out! thanks for the rec

I need to give Gatecreeper another go, Sonoran Deprivation seemed to get a lot hype last year but it didn't really leave a lasting impression on me. I've been trying to go back through some of last year's releases that didn't really click with me.

I figured as much in terms of the whole blatant-ness thing. My concern was moreso with the lesser-known bands that are somewhere in between - IE, stuff that's marked as "Nationalism", "Pride", on the Metal Archives. That and telling the difference between "we use totalitarian imagery style as provocative aesthetics to criticize totalitarianism", "we use totalitarian imagery because it's dark and imposing and we are slightly edgy" (so a ton of war metal bands - like Goatpenis (lol), Revenge, and Diocletian that walk on that blurry line), and "we are literal closet Nazis", haha. Thanks for the input.

Gojira only gets better if you're listening to their albums in reverse chronological order. Their latest is by far their weakest, IMO.

Saw Darkest Hour last night and they were great. Bummed I didn't get to see the opening acts (Tombs, Rivers of Nihil and Ringworm) but I wasn't planning on going and just decided to at the last minute so, I'm happy to have caught any of it.

I know their not the most obscure picks, but I forget how Doomsayer and A Thousand Words are just straight bangers.

Since I have nothing better to do, I quickly browsed setlist.fm and it looks like they played it on a tour in 2008 but I don't think they have played it since, at least from my extensive research.
