are we still lucky to be here? Prestigious

Yeah. It's one of my favorite weekends of the year. I'm doing all 4 days this year compared to 3 the last two years I've gone since they cut back on the open-air aspect of the festival that took place in an unoccupied lot in the middle of the city to two clubs that are across the street from another. I'm stoked that they shifted back to the festival's roots in clubs because I hate open air festivals with a passion. Too many people, way too hot on the asphalt...I don't miss it. This year will be a whole lot less tiring and a lot cooler.

Plus crab cakes. I miss good, fresh seafood. :)

That sounds amazing. I hate large festivals for the same reason, but club shows are the best.

king woman blew me the fuck away. ive been listening to that album a bit lately and seeing them live has me returning to it even more. and oathbreaker.....man, i dont know how she makes the sounds she does. going from beautiful and angelic singing to the most brutal black metal shrieks ive ever heard at the drop of a hat. amazing.

ive been to pitchfork fest 4 times and riot fest once.....deafheaven actually sounded extremely fucking good outdoors at p4k 2014 i think, yeah it was a year after sunbather and they debuted kettle, their sound being carried through the open field really worked for the atmosphere. the sound guy mixed the first two or so songs terribly tho but the rest of the set was on point. of the six times ive seen them thats probably one of the top 3 sets.

I still need to listen to that King Woman album.

After seeing their Audiotree session, I've been dying to catch Oathbreaker live. Hopefully I'll be able to go next Wednesday.

Why the hell have I never listened to Disma before? This album CRUSHES. Too bad they only put out one album.

jack shirley produced it, who im sure you know has recorded so many amazing bands (deafheaven, loma prieta, frameworks, newest oathbreaker, bosse-de-nage, jeff rosenstock, etc.) it has his signature sound to it but its a bit different since they're way slower and doomier than most bands he works with

I'm honestly not all that familiar with producers. In the last year or two, I've started to pay more attention, particularly with hip hop, but I'll definitely dig deeper into Jack Shirley's stuff. Thanks.

I'm now extra excited for the Oathbreaker show here in April. We get Khemmis instead of King Woman, and man I am stoked for them, let me tell you what.

OH SHIT ive heard this last khemmis album before!!!!! good shit i forgot about

is it bad that i tend to forget about bands more often if their art and/or font is kind of generic metal style? not that the art or font on this khemmis album is bad i just tend to forget about bands that use more traditional metal styles in their image. for whatever reason, its stupid, and not all the time but i have noticed it.

I always thought it was weird Deafheaven played Pitchfork, but given their crossover appeal it makes sense. I've been meaning to hit up Riot Fest for the past three years since I moved to Chicago and still haven't yet because of my hatred of large festivals. With that being said, if the Misfits didn't get me to go last year, I can't see myself going with any more urgency this year. I'll definitely hit up an aftershow or two depending on who's playing tho.

Two things about Disma: 1) They have a new EP coming out that's up for pre-order so you'll getting some new material from them soon:

DISMA “The Graveless Remains” 12″EP Pre-Orders Now Available | Profound Lore Records

    2) However, I hesitate to even listen to Disma nowadays because of the vocalist's Neo-Nazi stances. They've been kicked off a festival for associating with him before:

DISMA Kicked Off Deathfest Due To Nazi Ties After 10 Bands Threaten To Drop Off - Metal Injection

I'm read conflicting reports that he disavowed himself from those stances, but the stench still lingers. I'll probably give the new EP a casual listen. However, I won't be supporting them beyond that. There are better OSDM bands out there anyway.

They're like Pallbearer except better. Hunted would probably be in my top 10 for 2016 if I did it today, but I digress. I'm so stoked to see them live. I'll also agree that their for Hunted is not memorable, but it's nowhere near as atrocious as some of the other releases that are out there nowadays.

honestly pitchfork is a thousand times better than riot fest because riot fest is way too big. like, 9 stages i think. pitchfork is just 3 and two of them are right next to each other so theres no wait between sets on those two stages. way smaller park with less walking, i left every headlining set at riot fest '15 because i was too tired to stand by the time they went on because i was there pretty early every day because, it being such a big fest, bands i wanted to see are playing at literally all times. which also makes overlaps way more brutal than pitchfork, but they can be pretty bad at pitchfork too. last year at pitchfork i think fka twigs and oneohtrix point never overlaped for the two last sets of the night....prob wouldve killed myself if i had to make that choice

i was gonna say they give me pallbearer vibes (side note so does king woman but a bit more depressive and atmospheric, i thought of that today). another side note cant wait for the new pallbearer record, i didnt spend much time with foundations of burden even tho i liked it a lot but i still rock sorrow and extinction somewhat regularly, that record is huge. the new singles are just different enough to make their style not too stale which i think was my problem with foundations

Based on that description, Pitchfork sounds like an ideal festival logistically for me if I was going to spend money to go to one, but I'm just not a huge fan of their lineups year-to-year. Union Park is also in a much better part of the city than Douglas Park.

The two new singles for Pallbearer have been okay to me. I'm glad they're pushing their sound, but the new songs haven't clicked with me yet. I'm also a bit sour on Pallbearer because they've been boring live both times I've seen them. I might give them another shot when they come through here at the end of the month with Kayo Dot and Marissa Nadler tho. Not sure if my schedule will work out for that one (Going to see Nails the same week and need to be frugal with my money over the next few months cause of some personal stuff).

I'll check out the King Woman record when I get a chance. You're not the first person to give them a rec to me.

New Pallbearer is sooooo good. I'm very thankful for this thread recommending me in their direction. Such a cool band.

i wouldve HAD to ask him what working with vindsval was like. the answer would prob be "idk he refuses to speak to any living beings and is always cloaked in a shadow. he sent me drum tracks with a piece of parchment paper that said "you know what to do"" thats what i imagine vindsval is like

Disma's riffs fucking pummel, I just wish they'd kick Craig out of the band and bring in a new vocalist. His vocals aren't exactly anything special anyway.
