Yeah I think there was some other comments in here I was more addressing. But also its one of those things where the convo reminds me of how I feel on a certain topic. I remember people saying similar things about the entirety of the black metal genre on ap like 2 years ago. It just takes a while for people to get into new things and they kick and flail a little bit but then eventually if theyre actual music lovers they learn to find merit in genres that have decades of output even if it's not their bag.

Oh yeah my favorite song is totally "Chased Through the Woods by a Rapist" by Waking the Cadaver /s

But man Carcass is so good

Rings of Saturn write good songs and I think it's silly to equate faster or technical metal as incoherent or tasteless.

so far the death metal ive gotten into is opeth (who ive liked for a while) and gorguts. gonna try carcass next. oh yeah and ive gotten into gojira's recent stuff but ive heard their older stuff is more death inspired than magma and the one before it

I really like fast and technical metal just not RoS bc I don't think they write good songs. at all.

my point was only ever: "I don't like these specific bands, therefore I don't like this entire broad genre." is very stupid

I think the discrepancy lies in the fact that Rings of Saturn is a technical deathcore band, which is almost an oxymoron. They have the typical technical wankery, but incorporate a lot of chugs/breakdowns/core vocals:

Similar bands include Brain Drill, Beneath the Massacre, The Faceless, Archspire, etc.

And then you have the true tech death bands like the aforementioned Gorguts and Obscura. Ulcerate is a good modern example:

Then of course there's Demilich, Suffocation, Atheist, Deathspell Omega, etc.

They are two entirely different beasts.

I mean I've been known to sometimes listen to some stuff people sometimes accuse as being baseless wank, Origin and Spawn of Possession come to mind, even some Brain Drill. I think that all of these bands are more technical, have better riffs, AND write better/more memorable than RoS and Archspire etc.

This post eloquently sums up what I was trying to describe in the first place. Haha. I was just citing specific bands as examples moreso than anything else.

I actually quite like Rings Of Saturn a lot, and I don't find their songwriting to be incoherent at all. That being said, too much tech-death does wear on my ears after a while.

I'm in the same boat somewhat on the gore-heavy death metal - I get more than a little squicked out when I find out what I'm listening to describes rape for the sake of the dark imagery with no commentary (which is why shit like Infant Annihilator gets a pass on this from me, as they have a message they're delivering beyond just trying to be dark and edgy) and I often do either simply try to avoid bands that do it, or just try not to think about it. I'm still a complete sucker for brutal-death, though. Anything from New Standard Elite is delicious stuff.

all this Carcass talk reminds me how much I dislike Swansong. Great band though.

Keep on Rotting in the Free World is a fun track to see live though because it's so different than everything else they play.

I feel like Dying Fetus at least are more intelligent than the goregrind/pornogrind bands out there who yes, are idiotic. Hail of Bullets rules, too bad Martin left. But Asphyx are great too, so it's all good I suppose. Hopefully they hook back up with him at some point in the future, I just can't see HoB being the same without his distinct vocal style.

Exhumed's latest album is pretty light on gore, actually. And it happens to be, imo, their best stuff to date. The lyrics focus almost exclusively on political issues, albeit with gore aesthetics worked in.

And, unlike Rings of Saturn, those bands can actually write a song instead of just stringing together wank bullshit and trying way too hard to be impressive. It's effortlessly impressive with bands like Spawn of Possession or Origin, whereas RoS are trying way, way, way too hard.

Backing The Drip hardcore. Nasty as fuck, great shit.

To weigh in on the Carcass discussion, yeah, love them too. I will say I do enjoy later Carcass much more than early goregrind-era Carcass. Then again, it's been years since I touched their earlier stuff, so maybe my tastes have changed.

Dying Fetus has just never really done it for me. Call it more of a personal thing than anything else.

About Hail of Bullets, I think they're gonna be just fine in the long run if they decide to release any more studio material. Dave sounds great with the band. His vocals might not be as distinct as Martin's, but they still sound phenomenal live. His deep growls are immense.

I greatly enjoy Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and Dying Fetus every once in a while (pretty rarely). All definitely legendary. They just keep going and going it's crazy. And DF is definitely a weird band.

I think bands like Suffocation, Nile, and Decapitated are similarly pegged but are much more transcendent and three dimensional with their seminal releases. They changed the game in an unforgettable way and nothing was the same after those releases. Decapitated's output has sucked soo bad for a long while now though haha but Winds of Creation and Nihility are absolute top 20 dm masterpieces.

Deicide is good, but man they are such a one trick pony lol.

Speaking of Nile, I just bought my ticket to see them with Overkill next week.

Speaking of shows, should I go see Marduk and Incantation next week? I'm leaning towards hell yes.

Speaking of hell yes, that new DH song is amazing^^^

there isn't a proper word for the setting sun.

I listened to that Rings of Saturn song last linked, and it made me think of Fallujah. Silver lining, I guess.

EDIT: Sorry, such an unnecessary, negative comment.

    EDIT: I stand by it.

I have to deal with Rings Of Saturn on Friday since they're opening for Carnifex. I mean, they're not bad, but I haven't really listened to them much since the whole half speed thing and hearing their guitarist is a turd.
Also saw them a few years ago opening for Decapitated when they had their old vocalist.

Maybe it's been posted/mentioned, but this track by a project with members of BTBAM/Haken/Cynic called Nova Collective is pretty damn good:
