Hour of Penance is one of the better bands releasing tech death nowadays, IMO. But it just doesn't do anything for me nowadays. I got burnt out on it in college with bands like The Faceless (Planetary Duality) and Obscura.

Have The Drip been mentioned? Heard a song from their newest and like holy shit it's mean as hell. Relapse is gonna get a ton of my money real soon

    a literal succubitch

Tech-death is incredibly hit or miss for me, but Hour Of Penance keeps their songwriting tight and beefy. And not noodly. Make no mistake, I like some noodly shit, but not tech-death a lot of the time.

there isn't a proper word for the setting sun.

Short tech death-albums are the best. After 35 minutes I just zone out.

Mammoth Grinder has announced a new album to be released this fall. New lineup has Ulsh on bass but I'm hoping he just wrote all the riffs.

yeah, I got their new one in the mail the other day and love it. Relapse has been getting a ton of my money for the past six years or so now, haha. Speaking of Relapse, the new Black Anvil and Iron Reagan albums rip too.

ISIS live album being released next month. Got excited when I saw the teaser trailer because I didn't read the date properly and thought they were back together making new music. Not sure why. Still, a ISIS live album will be great.

I imagine that even if they did reunite, it'd be a touch more difficult being an active/touring band named ISIS in 2017, ha. Still holding out hope they do eventually do something new someday though. Live album should be pretty dope.

I still think being dismissive of whole genres with strong canons is silly based on bands in the genre that are bad

It was silly when people were doing that with black metal

and it's silly reading it about tech death too

I agree, but I can kind of get why people would feel that way about tech death. It's not exactly the most approachable and easily consumed subgenre (at least for first time listeners). It can be sort of exhausting listening to the genre if you're not really invested or appreicative of it. Like, I remember listening to Gorguts' Obscura the first time and wondering what in the hell was going in. Obviously there's a huge difference between that album (along with Atheist or Cryptopsy's early stuff) and some generic Suffocation rip-off that offers nothing new to the genre; first impressions won't be generous if you jump in starting with the latter.

That being said, I think it's a fascinating subgenre - one of the best, even - if you're willing to approach it within an open mind.

I checked out a little bit of Black Anvil too, pretty interesting. Pretty cool that it's basically 3/4 of Kill Your Idols hah

This is the absolute best news.

Do you have that cassette they did a couple years back?

I've gotten more into death metal in the past 2-3 years, but it's the gory stuff that I don't think I can do at all

Oh Gorguts! Pleiade's Dust was so good. Going to listen to that today.

You mean you don't like bands like Exhumed, Impaled, Dead Infection, and Torsofuck?

Big fan of Dead Infection's EP, The Greatest Shits.

Hah, not quite. Been looking into a lot of seminal acts but Cannibal Corpse I may have to pass on

Listen to Cannabis Corpse. All the death, none of the gore.

Dillinger have been involved in a pretty bad bus crash in Poland, apparently none of them are injured badly but 13 people were hurt in the crash.

lol what all the best death metal bands have gore imagery to some degree. if you let that shit stop you from enjoying cannibal corpse or carcass, ya missing out

Yup. And it's really easy to ignore the gore imagery and just listen to the music if you're not into it.

I agree with this statement for the most part, but there are some bands out there that have lyrics about rape and sexual deviance that rubs me the wrong way at times. Bands like Dying Fetus and Gorgasm. If it's just general gore imagery like Carcass, then I'm more apt to listen to it.

With that all being said, my favorite death metal bands tend to have lyrical content outside of the gore realm like Bolt Thrower and Hail of Bullets.

Carcass is sick, it's more the bands that use as the primary component of their sound/imagery, I.e. Exhumed

My original post was more rooted in the fact that I've grown tired of a lot of the newer tech death bands focusing a lot on wankery and playing fast as opposed to actually writing coherent songs (I'm looking at you, Rings of Saturn). Bands like Gorguts and Obscura are still solid to me, but because of my interests in death metal shifting more towards OSDM - I haven't listened to those bands as much recently. These posts have been a reminder that I need to give Gorguts EP from last year another spin though.
