I could do without the monologue at the end of Pink Cellphone.

Any fans of Elder in here?

Elder's rad. Don't they have a new album coming out this year?

In stuff swboyd has been listening to recently:

Wiegedood - driving black metal from members of Oathbreaker. They have a new album coming out in a couple weeks that sounds like an early contender for BM album of the year.

Ecstatic Vision - Heavy tribal psych from ex-members of a life once lost. It's a trip. That's all I'm gonna say.

just starting to get into prog metal, have been checking out animals as leaders / periphery / btbam / scale the summit / etc

does anyone have recs for weird-ish stuff with interplays between speedy and subdued complexity? think i would also be into neoclassical elements

instrumental stuff is fine, i'm more picky with vocals probably

The only part of the album I don't enjoy is the end of Pink Cellphone. Otherwise, SNW is a great album. Xerces grew on me a ton over the years.

Release My Mind, My Garden Grows

Not exactly sure if its what you're looking for but Pomegranate Tiger is pretty cool instrumental prog metal project I found a while back. Worth at least checking out

To throw a few recs out there:

Astronoid - Atmospheric black metal (or "dream thrash" as they style it) with entirely clean vocals. Might not be as neoclassical as you're looking for, but the atmospheres alternating between airy passages and pummeling riffs it creates are something else.

Protest the Hero - Metalcore with some neoclassical flourishes that also melds in some post-hardcore influences that sound like Coheed and At The Drive-In. I haven't listened to their most recent releases, but Kezia and Fortress were jams for me back in the day.

The Human Abstract - Prog metal with neoclassical style guitar work. I discovered these guys randomly by watching Headbanger's Ball way back in the day and they absolutely blew my mind. I went out and bought their debut, Nocturne, the next day. The vocals can be a bit jarring on their first two records, but they improved significantly (IMO) when they added Travis Richter to their lineup for their third album. You might know him from From First To Last.

    The Czar

Wretched is overall a standard death metal band, but they recorded one song that's a proggy masterpiece.

Also BTBAM's catalog alone is a wide variety that is definitely worth exploring. They haven't incorporated much neoclassical, but a lot of songs incorporate everything from jazz, blues, even fucking polka and bluegrass. Colors is the album that lots of people tout as their masterpiece which I can't overly disagree with, but if you want to see more "out-there" ideas incorporated also check out their other albums. The Great Misdirect is far more focused and features their tightest guitar work, Future Sequence is (in my opinion) one of the best space-concept albums ever made, and Coma Ecliptic is just good old fun.

On an unrelated note, anybody here listen to Cormorant?

I hate most of that shit, but these are amazing

EDIT: the Gordian Knot and the second Cynic are probably the closest ones of the bunch to what you're looking for, but listen to all of them, I'm sure you'll like them
