I highly recommend following his Instagram, dude totally figured out to mimic Zdzisław’s work and it’s truly something to look at.

 

He also did the artwork for this too and honestly, it’s one of my favorite metal album covers of the past 20 years.

Decibel posted their Top 40 of the year

 

For fucks sake. It's mid November. There's ~10% chance the AOTY hasn't even come out yet.

 

I think it's too early. Rough Trade did the same thing

 

Decibel publishes their list pretty early every year due to publishing deadlines because they're still a print publication. This year is no exception. They also likely have access to all of the big releases that are coming for the rest of the year due to being members of the media.

 

It's probably best just to go into this with no introduction beyond saying it'll only take a minute of your time.

 

I've been ~terrible~ at listening to stuff this year, especially lately. I'll take a look at that Decibel list to check out things I've missed.

 

Any way you look at it, it’s a bit premature.

FFS we still have Respire, Hatebreed and Of Feather and Bone just to name a few.

 

With a print publication, it's either this method for their January 2021 issue or be behind for the February 2021 when they announce information about it next month since all this stuff is driven by the newsstand date. There's no great way to do it.

December is historically a pretty quiet month for releases anyway so it's not like too much is going to be excluded by putting it out early. They do have some November releases that aren't officially out yet on there (Of Feather and Bone, Eternal Champion). There are a few things later in November and December that might make this list that may be getting cut off (Fuck the Facts, Deeds of Flesh, Undergang, Yashira, Tombs), but it's still a fairly inclusive list for the year IMO.

 

If I were their chief editor I would opt to release something in the January ‘21 issue but I’m not so...

 

That's your prerogative. Considering the January issue would be on newsstands in the latter half of December and there's usually a six week turnover period between deadline and distribution in the print world, it makes sense for them to have it finalized now. I know they had an issue with someone leaking their list a few years ago so that's probably why they just preempt it and publish it online.

Everybody does their shit differently depending on their needs. I can't imagine Decibel's list being that different anyway if they published it a month later. If anything, it's give me a chance to check out things that I've missed before other lists come out to clutter my "need to checkout" queue (Paysage d'Hiver, Sweven, Goden, Godtrhymm, Lamp of Murmuur).
