I really need to give those Ripped to Shreds, Sleep, and Slugdge albums another listen because I thought they were solid, but not top 10 level material. The Panopticon album was a bit of a disappointment to me - the production on the black metal half was a bit off for me (which is sad because the material there was bonkers level good) and the folk/bluegrass half wasn't my thing at all. There's a lot on this list I still need to check out more in-depth as well...namely Cosmic Church and Torture Rack.

i've died the last five years in maryland on memorial day weekend. it isn't as bad as you think.

I feel the same for Panopticon. The black metal half was pretty ok and the other half was....also not my thing lol. Props to him because he has that passion for bluegrass/folk stuff, I think maybe I wouldn't be so against it if he released it as another project or something. But what do I know.

The Ripped to Shreds placement might be a bit inflated due to the guy being a regular/active poster on the sub. Just speculating, but it would make sense. I'm just all about the HM-2 goodness.

Considering that Dismember has become my favorite new metal revelation this year, I probably should check this out more in-depth.

Cosmic Church is solid upon first listen.

I don't mind indoor festivals at clubs, which really just feel more like all day type shows...which is why Maryland Deathfest has been great the last few years because it's just two venues across the street from each other that have metal bands playing for four days in a row. Your typical outdoor Lolla/Riot Fest/Chicago Open Air type ordeal? Not my thing by a longshot. We've got Full Terror Assault Open Air in the southern part of the state, but that's five(?) hours outside the city...though the lineup ain't bad this year:

I’ve always considered them to be basically Satantic Kiss, like from the outfits to their own stage show. Like that’s not putting them down for it though, I dig bands that keep the theatrics of the rock show alive and their music, while not really being my thing, is cool.

So are some crucial BM releases this year for me to check out? I dig Pantopticon’s release so I was to see what else I’m missing. @sophos34, I figured you’d be one to ask.

The Ghost album from this year is still fun as hell, and as long as they keep giving me songs like "Miasma" I won't complain one bit.

On the other hand, I don’t see what’s so special about that Tomb Mold album. Like it’s really good for a death metal album but I’m not floored by it.

Yeah that new Trna album is dope. Haven't listened to it in a while. I should change that.

Ghost is cheesy but it’s fun cheesy, I just find all their albums to be uneven besides the latest one which still has a couple duds. Square Hammer is one of my favorite songs of the decade though.

Hahaha, I've seen that meme a lot but tbh (in my experience at least) it's mostly always posted by Ghost fans just having a good natured laugh. And tbh I don't think it's an assessment Tobias would necessarily disagree with given that there's always been this layer of tongue-in-cheek playfulness to what Ghost are about.

That being said, there's no doubt people out there making the same joke in a dismissive light. I've seen no shortage of acne nerds moaning about how they thought Ghost looked awesome in photos and then were disappointed when they weren't theistic Satanic black metal which is...dumb. And missing the point.

It's a self-aware kind of cheesy, which I think is what makes it work. Although I think I'd probably agree their records have a bad habit of being varying degrees of uneven, which the exception of Opus Eponymous which I feel is a pretty solid, concise neo-doom album.

But yea, I have tickets to see them in October (the night before Halloween! ha) and it'll be the first time seeing them since 2015 so I'm very much looking forward to catching Square Hammer live.

I may die again by the end of the weekend.
