So I found out that August Burns Red released a remixed version of Messengers, somehow they managed to make the album sound even worse than it did in 2007. Like the drums and vocals just overpower the mix and it sounds awful.

CD collecting is a big passion of mine. I can't do vinyl because 1. I don't have the space, 2. I worry relentlessly about the ones I do have getting damaged ANY time I transport them, and 3. money. CD's, however, I can do. I want to have a collection as large as InfidelAmsterdam's one day (fuck the dude himself though - asshole).

Am I wrong in thinking Death is the best metal band of all time, by a good amount?

I was never a fan of the guitar tone on the original, but it's part of what makes that album so nostalgic for me. They really streamlined their sound with Constellations onwards in terms of tone. The remix turns up the bass, tones the guitar down, and turns the china way way down, which sucks because that album is literally riddled with china lol

I think there is an argument to be made that they are the best death (sigh) metal band of all time. They don't call Chuck Schuldiner the "Father of Death Metal" for no reason. I would probably take Morbid Angel over them, but Chuck passed (RIP) before Death might have bastardized their roots like Morbid Angel eventually did themselves, so his legacy didn't really have a colossal dip in quality like MA's. The progressive sounds in the later Death albums were a great direction, wish we could have seen the next step.

I mean, it's them, Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Obituary, Pestilence, and Possessed up there in terms of the best/important death titans. But across all genres? I wouldn't even know where to begin..

I actually quite liked the remixed messengers hah

But I also have zero nostalgia for that record.

i dont know how you could possibly measure the "best" metal band but i know my favorite of all time will always be isis, they're pretty much singlehandedly responsible for me getting into the wider world of metal and not just the metalcore shit i liked as a kid.

I'll actually need to check out some of those other bands, I've listened to a few of MA's earlier albums and Autopsy's first two.

Do Atheist and Cynic fall into the death category?

Saying something is the best of any (insert genre) is very subjective but the argument could be made certain bands set the precedent for said genre. Death could certainly be considered one of those bands.

Hell yeah they do. Atheist is death with tech/jazz leanings. They're so sick. I linked this song a while ago, but here it is again because it's awesome:

Cynic was thrash on their early demos, but went full prog/death with Focus, which is a masterpiece (if you can get past the vocoder vocals, which I like). That album was like 10 years ahead of its time.

My bad lol. I omitted them because the bands I mentioned are straight up pure old school death metal, whereas Atheist and Cynic have the tech and prog elements. But I would for sure mention them as being some of the more significant bands in any branch of death metal.

If I wasn't such a fat fuck, I'd PayPal @swboyd like $200 and take all those shirts. I have an unhealthy obsession with t-shirts.

The one old shirt I wish I could have is Botch’s baby blue shirt with the gay porn parody that Brian Cook drew, that shirt would turn so many heads.

Same here. I don't know if it's nostalgia or what but while I still love vinyl a ton and listen to streaming a ton, CDs hold a special place in my heart. I know this is a really weird thing to get hung up on but I like the booklet format for the artwork and lyrics, as opposed to the sheet format with vinyl. Which is fine too, for what it is, but yeah I still fucks heavily with CDs and always will.

god I wish those guys would reunite. I'd love to see what a new ISIS album in 2k18 would sound like, especially after the different projects its ex members have gone on to form in the band's wake.

I had to forcibly curb my band t-shirt obsession last year haha. When I first started my job (Hot Topic) I kinda went nuts with the 40% employee discount and steadily kept it up until last year when I had to be like "ok this is too much, stop".

But then we just got in new Bahtory, Mayhem, Gojira, and Black Sabbath t-shirts recently so I went broke my t-shirt embargo ha.

I haven’t bought an actual CD outright since 2012. It was Gaslight Anthem’s Handwritten.

That Palms record was pretty solid, definitely wouldn't mind something new from that project. Old Man Gloom is great but unfortunately I don't think its gonna happen any time soon. Santos' posts on the OMG facebook page are absolute gold though.

Oceanic is top five post metal material, I’d put in my metal album top ten. False Light not only has one of the best guitar riffs ever, it also has one of the best soft to loud dynamics. The song goes to loud to soft in the middle, like this simmering volcano. It just builds and builds to a point, where the song just erupts and flows into this powerful end. Fuck, I love that band.

Not sure how many of you frequent the Chorus Album club thing that Nate was posting in here about the other week but I suggested an album to someone in there that was in a similar vein of ISIS that's worth checking out. It's obviously not as good as ISIS as they're the masters of this genre imo but I've loved this album for years now.

It's an album by Mahumodo called Waves that came out back in 2003 in the UK.

I primarily don’t buy CDs anymore just because my laptop does not have a CD drive, and I usually read my CDs to MP3s anyway. Plus with CDs it’s a lot easier to buy a ton of them for cheap, which end up taking more space than vinyl, which I only usually buy if it’s an album that I love/guaranteed to love
