He's a shithead. Pantera gave birth to groove metal which is kinda made fun of as a genre. There are some sick riffs here and there. I'm not really a fan but there's enough there worth checking out

lol I love this snippet on the Archives:

"A meeting between Darrell and Metallica's James Hetfield turned fateful in 1985. At this point, Darrell had a "wall of glam" in his room, with pictures of Bon Jovi and whatnot. James spit on it, and Darrell, instead of getting angry, joined in. The "wall of loogies" is still there today. This marked a change in the band, as "I am the Night" was far heavier and faster."

given what I know now about him, esp. w/r/t his racism (esp. the pretty blatant Islamaphobia in Superjoint’s lyrics), I wouldn’t get into Pantera now if I’ve never listened. That being said I do enjoy the Pantera albums, if not for understanding their place within the genre

^That and the fact that Dimebag's guitars (and well Pantera as a whole) proiminently featured Confederate iconography. I think it is okay to recognize their contributions to metal in general while acknowledging how backward they appear nowadays.

Kinda glad I never got into Pantera. Even with the confederate shit I always took it as a "proud Texan" thing but then the white power nonsense and all. Just not worth the effort.

Someone mentioned judas priest...I wish I could find the article but this guy like mathematically showed that Judas Priest is the most influential band in the history of metal. Like moreso than metallica, maiden, sabbath etc.

If it it's metal, it can be traced back to Judas Priest, which can be traced back to Black Sabbath

On another note, I caught Municipal Waste tonight. I had pretty much no expectations as I knew little about them but damn. What a fun show. Highlights definitely included the dude in the beer bottle costume in the pit. That was pretty great.

this is true. either way, i've always maintained that sabbath and priest are the two most important and influential metal bands ever so it's really just splitting hairs to pinpoint which one's MORE influential imo.

big time, and to think I waited until I was like 27 to listen to them.

what I stated is obviously a massive oversimplification but those are the generally agreed upon starting points.

this convo reminds me of an interesting thread I read in r/metal the other day about the demise of thrash in the 90's. It's a pretty good read:

sabbath pretty much invented the sound of metal but judas priest opened up into an actual genre of music and not just a heavy take on the blues

Talking of the classics I've tried countless times but I can never get into Maiden. There's tracks here and there that I like but i can't make it through any one of their albums. I think I put it mainly down to Bruce's vocals.

Maybe because I'm born and raised in Dallas, but I feel like Pantera is essential. The racism is a bit off putting for sure, but some of their music is undeniable.

I can't imagine being a metal head and not listening to Cowboys through Steel.

Also, to expand on the Pantera thing. Cowboys was like my entry point into metal. That and the black album. Got them both in 5th grade and they changed my life forever.

If you aren't going to dive into Pantera's whole discography, at least listen to Domination. Arguably the best breakdown ever.

Pantera's one case where I'm actually able to separate the art from the artist, but that's also likely because it's an artifact of the times. If a band nowadays relied as much on racist and an oppressive imagery, I'd disavow them in a heartbeat. But since Pantera is a product of the 90s, they get a free pass.

With that being said, there still are better bands from that time period. Just not a huge fan of groove metal period though.

I can't separate art from artist but it's really easy to listen to bands who have already cemented their place in music history because as I said there's ways to listen without supporting them and they're already written into the history books. A new band with similar views shouldn't be afforded the chance to get anywhere

I love the Gas Monkey venues here.

They book lots of rock/metal and always have awesome promos for tickets.

They're doing a metal Monday special for Presidents Day and I just grabbed $5 tickets for Watain/Destroyer 666, Rings of Saturn and Dying Fetus/Thy Art/Rivers of Nihil.
