i feel like those are the bands that have a lot of technical skill but less skill with creating interesting songs

would rec David Maxim Micic and Intervals

Check the Deafheaven thread. @swboyd recommended some black metal to me the other day in that thread.

Here's some bands that got me into black metal and expanded my taste in the genre

    Deafheaven (duh)
    Wolves In The Throne Room
    Woods of Desolation
    An Autumn for Crippled Children
    Blut Aus Nord
    Altar of Plagues
    Bosse-de-Nage
    Oathbreaker
    Show Me A Dinosaur
    Trna
    Pyramids
    Lluvia
    Alcest
    Ash Borer
    Krallice

didn't pick specific albums since they all pretty much have whole discogs worth exploring, probably forgetting some big ones but yeah check any of those bands out

Deafheaven: Sunbather is a good place to start and a nice intro into the genre. More commercial black metal(if there ever was such a thing)

See I fail to see what's commercial or mainstream about deafheaven, their songs are still mad long and dense. They just appeal to fans of other underground genres outside of metal, like post rock and shoegaze, neither of which are mainstream or commercial genres

That’s what I am saying, they cross over into the more popular genres, especially what’s popular here on Chorus so they are a nice gateway band into the genre. It’s not a bad thing.

They wanted a FEW bands, not the entire history. That’s overwhelming and I have heard each one.

they're not THAT popular. Under 30k twitter followers, they play like 1k cap venues without selling out, I think their popularity is overstated

  20. sophos34

yeah I left off stuff like inter arma and young and in the way because they're not really black metal

what? the list? i got started, and i couldn't stop.

and that's far from a complete history. lol. it's just a list of bands to check out at their leisure.

Like I said before, bringing black metal into more people's hands (and ears) is not a bad thing. It is a genre that deserves more recognition.

Deafheaven is just the band that people (like myself) who aren't really familiar with black metal know. I mean they opened for Lamb of God and Anthrax. Not saying their mainstream, but as far as black metal goes, that's about as mainstream as it gets.

as mainstream as it gets doesn't even remotely mean mainstream though so idk why that's the word used when other words are much more fitting, like crossover
