I going to see Machine Head tomorrow and ABR on Friday, so I know all about nostalgia. Granted I got tickets to both for $5...

Thrill Seeker is a great album though... and Messengers and Constellations are a lot of fun. Some of the most recognizable breakdowns in metalcore.

I couldn't make it through half of a song. Guys mentioned it earlier but the lyrics are just ugly. Normally I can ignore it but it's so so bad haha. Some of the riffs were fun, about all I can say.

My all time favorite ABR song, with some of my all time favorite breakdowns (at 1:30, 2:42, and 3:35)

Also here's a slab of solid death metal that came out last week so as to balance this post with actual metal:

Wait really? I liked once more round the sun a lot. Admittedly that was my first major exposure to them so I spun Leviathan and stuff well after.

I wouldn't go that far. Triple Beam is maybe the worst song I've ever heard... and there are a handful of other clunkers, but there's at least 4-5 solid tracks.

I'm hoping they'll stick to stuff from the previous few records, and I don't mind hearing Ten Ton Hammer.

I'm not overly excited for the show, but I think it will be a decent time.

Barbarian is a goddamn jam. There are songs that I tap my fingers to and play along in my head all the time whenever I'm nervous/bored and this is one of my go-to songs lol

let me get this out of the way first: i'm glad machine head is okay. i do not wish any ill will towards them as people.

i think a further reason this album sucks even more for me is how Robb has been complaining about critical reaction on facebook and in the metal media, especially in the wake of the Decibel review (Machine Head Call Out Decibel Reviewer After Negative Review Of New Album "Catharsis" | Theprp.com). Admittedly a lot of the decibel review is humorous hyperbole, the way Robb acted is childish and petulant at best. you've been at this 20+ years and have been lambasted in the past. hold your head high with a bit of dignity.

with that being said, seeing blackening and locust songs live would be pretty dope. so have a good time!

Oh, for sure. Rob kinda seems like a naracistic douche anyway, which exmembers have said led them to leaving the band. Phil is a solid guitar player and will be fun to watch but I never really listen to Machine Head anymore anyways so its whatever.

  12. I've enjoyed expanding my tastes, but melodeath has always been my comfort zone. Been going back to a lot of MPE recently. These guys can write a jam.

Seeking out “Triple Beam” yesterday led me to YouTubing their old nu-metal material, which led me down a three hour obscure nu-metal rabbit hole, so thanks a lot Machine Head

god, this. and in my experience, their fanbase is pretty lame to boot.

they're such dogshit lol. I appreciate what Rob is TRYING to say, but god is he bad at actually saying it ha. Doesn't help that the music behind those lyrics is almost all reheated nu-metal farting. It's such a shame, they were on one of the best second winds in metal with the streak from The Blackening to Bloodstone & Diamonds, and then they drop this lead turd on everyone's heads.

Reaaaaallllyyyyy hope they satisfied whatever weird regressive nu-metal itch they got with this album and go back to groove/thrash on the next one. If they start wearing Tripp pants and Static X hair I'm gonna be extremely sad.

Timewalk from Missouri. Probably more of a hardcore band, but there's enough metal riffing there to keep me interested while I'm sleep deprived on a Tuesday morning.

Gonna be honest... I've been visiting the old guard of nu-metal from back in the day as of late as well and I'm realizing I actually unironically like quite a lot of it. Maybe it's a benefit of not having grown up on the stuff (I didn't grow up on much at all, in truth) but some of this stuff is solid. Especially some of the bass lines. Underappreciated aspect of nu-metal, imo.

I was the perfect age for Nu-Metal when it boomed and still love a lot of it today. I’d put a lot of my love of it down to nostalgia but there were definitely some truly great bands in that scene, especially in the pre 2000 wave of it.

I decided to relisten to Catharsis since I'm going to see Machine Head tonight, and I'm starting to agree. It is pretty terrible. I originally thought it was decent with some clunkers, but now I'm thinking the bad far outweighs the good. Maybe hearing some of the songs live will change my mind, but I'm hoping for a "The Blackening" and "Unto the Locust" heavy set.

    Random updates:

The new Tribulation finally clicked for me and sounds great. Blackened rock'n'roll might be one of my favorite new takes on the traditional black metal mold with their new release and Cloak's album from last year.

The new Agrimonia is also great. An awesome blend of crust, black metal, and post-metal. I forgot I'd actually seen them live with Enabler (before the stories about Jeff's abuse came out) and Take Over and Destroy until listening to the record earlier today. Hopefully they come back to the states soon because their layered blend of many genres would do pretty well in a live setting...
