apropos of nothing, I just want to remind everyone that Old Man Gloom's Facebook page is the best thing on the internet.

Power Trip is still the best thing to come out this year, but here's some other heavy releases that I've enjoyed.

    Code Orange - Forever
    Iron Reagan - Crossover Ministry
Hour of Penance - Cast the First Stone
Darkest Hour - Godless Prophets and the Migrant Flora
Drawing Last Breath - Final Sacrifice
    Bullcreek - Osschaert
    Rude - Remnants
    Havok - Conformicide
Ex Deo - The Immortal Wars
    Body Count - Bloodlust
    Foreseen - Grave Danger
Warbringer - Woe to the Vanquished
Full of Hell - Trumpeting Ecstasy

I only listened to the first track before I made it into work, but this is killer. Thanks for the recommendation. I look forward to my ride home from work.

It hasn't even been out a week, and I have to say it might be their best album yet. I'll need to listen to Roots of Earth..., Rudiments..., and the Merzbow collab (which essentially is a FOH full-length) back-to-back-to-back to really make that conclusions though.

Glad you like it, man. They have a massive sound for a two-piece. I'm seeing them live before the end of the month with Nightbringer and UADA so hopefully the new material translates well to that setting.

Hard to believe they're only a 2 piece. I'll have to check out Nightbringer and UADA as well. Black metal is still pretty new to me.

Also why did it take me so long to listen to The Lord Weird Slough Feg? Traveller is a freaking masterpiece.

out of morbid curiosity I tried to give the new All That Remains album a listen and goddamn is it even worse than what I expected. so fucking wimpy and lightweight. which sorta makes phil's idiot redpill alpha male libertarian edgelord bullshit all that more embarrassing.

They're playing a show here next week, and I've always been a fan (less and less over the years, but still) so I'm probably gonna go, but I listened to the new record too, and it's REALLY REALLY not good. I was expecting some poppiness, which I would be okay with if the songs were good, but they aren't and it's super "lightweight" to the point that it makes their last few albums seem brutally heavy. I spun the rest of their discography to see how well it held up, and they have lots of solid material, even on the last few records, but Madness is by far their worst output.

edit: Just looked at the setlist from the last few shows... maybe I'm not gonna go after all.

So... I wound up seeing All That Remains last night.

    Shouldn't have.

Avatar opened up and it seemed like most of the crowd was there for them. I was only vaguely familiar with them before hand. They brought lots of energy and put on a good show, but it's not really my thing.

All That Remains was a joke. They had backing tracks for just about every song. I noticed MANY times when one or more members would just not be playing but you'd still hear their part. The setlist was WEAK. Like I said, I enjoy most of their discography, but the songs they chose to play were bottom tier tracks. 1-2 songs from Fall of Ideals. Nothing from This Darkened Heart.

Phil has his armpits (and presumably entire body) shaved, which was distracting.

How do Phil's vocals sound live nowadays? Videos I've seen from the last few years seem to indicate that he sounds like shit now.

Man I saw them way back when they had just released The Fall of Ideals and they were great (this was like 10 years ago). Even though they haven't really released anything decent since that album, sucks to hear that they're mailing it in these days. I always though Phil was a super talented vocalist, great highs & lows, good cleans, etc.

Phil's a decent vocalist in studio, but his live vocals have been shit over the last few years from the youtube videos that I've seen.

With that being said, this song is still a jam. It pains me that they never really played it live after the initial touring for This Darkened Heart:

That's fairly accurate. He sounds decent at times, but overall he was pretty restrained. Even when they played the acoustic songs, he didn't sound great.

I think that might be the reason that they don't play a lot of older material anymore. I don't think he can hit those screams/growls anymore.

All this being said, I pulled out the DVD from 2007 and it's still great.

I think I was even more bummed because I like a lot of their more recent material, but they choose to play the worst songs from those records. I looked at the setlist before hand so I knew what I was getting into though.

Question time: what artist would you guys love to see work with Kurt Ballou at some point if possible? I think at some point someone said something about the potential to be had if Despised Icon worked with him and I fully agree on that. Another band I think would be interesting to see work with Ballou is The Acacia Strain. It'd be intriguing to see where Ballou takes them, with that hazy, surreal atmosphere TAS already knows how to build so well with their music.
