Yip has produced some stuff I like, but overall his track record's not good. We'll see what comes of this...

Why do they love him though, haha. Do these bands just like hanging out with him or do they think his albums sound great? Are people going to work with him because so many other bands are? I just find it odd.

I don't really talk about Yip or related topics anywhere else on the internet so I don't have a good answer to that. I bet Reddit loves him though lol

    I'm confused on this too

He could just be a good guy to work with, interpersonally speaking. My cynical guess is that he doesn't push bands to stray from their comfort zone and that's why they like working with him.

Doubt it. He's produced several records that suddenly had that feel which was new for them(and usually sucked). That mid tempo, grungy, type stuff. The records I like of his are established bands who op probably told him they weren't gonna do that sound and did what they want. JMO

I'd love to hear something similar to Hold On Dodge and Chamberlain Waits...but I'm expecting something similar to Rented World.

    Meh x5

Maybe neither of us is. All I know is I've never seen a producer in this scene who is so loved by bands but polarizing to fans lol. He's very hit or miss for me as well, but a lot of the bands/records he records really aren't my thing anyway, so I could be biased. Now that I think about it after seeing Jason's post, he really butchered that TSL EP, which is a shame.

Those TSL songs are fantastic, and he absolutely murdered them. They have no flare, no life, and no pop to them. Thankfully, the structure and writing is good enough to make it an enjoyable EP (especially Lucky) but still. In his entire track record there are only two records he's done that I legitimately enjoy: the Turnover and Polar Bear Club records. The Tigers Jaw album is also decent, but everything else he's done is garbage imo. He really ruined that B&C LP2 for me.

It just depends. I think he's done some super solid work on a lot of albums and helped a lot of bands. I've had some issues with an album or two he's done, but overall I've always thought he did more good than harm.

  16. I have the literal opposite opinion.

I love just about everything these guys have done so it's pretty much guaranteed that it will end up on my AOTY list.

Of all the producers to blame for ruining albums, I never would have thought Yip would be the one to catch hell. Granted, I haven't listened to his whole body of work, but I love the sound of a few of the albums he's worked on.

I enjoy what Will Yip has done with Pity Sex. Totally excited for new Menzingers.

What about Keep You? I love the sound of that album. Brilliant record and appropriate production IMO. Yay/nay?

Good record, but not great production.

  23. Meh. I've had a beer so ... really not an album I think's anything that special. And it's not helped by the tin-foil sound. It would hit much harder with a more full sound, and I really don't like the mixing — it's too restrained and pulled into itself. It's probably on the better end of Yip albums because of the songs, not the production.

Hope this isn't sacrilege (probably is), but it would also hit harder if more of the melodies went somewhere interesting.

And if they really let it explode in the bigger moments, which is part of Jason's production comments.

Yeah. It's just personal preference. What's something he did that you liked?
