It is very cloudy. Based off the season five flashbacks I assumed Chris and Tony were even closer in age than they are here, which would mean he definitely was not under his wing.

The show always shuffled around who Tony's mentor was. Sometimes he says Junior was like his father but he seems to be cold in this. We knew Johnny was aloof and in prison for a while.

 

Also young tony was definitely riding the bus with an implied to be young artie bucco, which drives me even crazier about how much older they made Sil in this, because theyre all the same goddamn age all with daughters in high school together in season 1 lol.

i dont want to say i hated this but man the more i think about it the more i do lol

 

It was Artie. Jackie Aprile is there in the ice cream truck. Silvio, Jackie, and Tony rob Feech La Manna's card game.

Some of the other stuff is excusable, like the gap between Tony and Chris, because they wanted to have him involved more in the film, but the Silvio part could have been another.

Another weird choice is that they brought the son of the actor who played Carmine Lupertazzi in to look at Christmas trees but he is playing a different Carmine.

 

The Silvio thing made absolutely no sense. When I started I excused it because I assumed it was to play a bigger role but he really didn't do anything.

It's funny how this was marketed as the rise of Tony when really this was the rise of Junior.

 

infeel like it was advertised as the rise of dickie. he’s top billed and i believe was the focal point of one of the posters. of course they put basically every gandolfini scene in the trailer

I read a review last night that said the writing is all very hollow. That’s how it felt to me—hollow. The characters are not expanded here, but rather diminished to a set of idiosyncrasies in that they become caricatures of things we remember from the series. And that might be what killed it for me, that these portrayals come off as tribute rather than sincere approaches to character.

 

I finished my first full watch through of the show on Thursday and went to the theater to watch this yesterday after work. I don't know how well this works for someone who watched the show in the early 2000s and then saw this film 15 years later, but as someone who JUST watched the series, I thought this film was pretty lackluster.

 

I’m honestly sorry you had to experience this disappointment in that way, especially knowing how it feels to end this series on such a high note.

 

It's fine. I didn't hate the film, but I was super hyped for it and just kinda felt deflated leaving the theater.

 

I wonder how bad that proposed scene with Edie Falco would have been.

 

The more I think back in this, the more I agree with all the criticism.

But ultimately, I take a lickin but keep on tickin

 

Yeah it’s unfortunate. It’s hard to do a revival right. But David Lynch did it and knocked it out of the park. I kinda always knew this wouldn’t be on that level, but I trusted Chase and he didn’t really deliver

 

i had a fine time watching this but legit felt off once it ended. the Silvio cosplay was confusing but i loved the Tony, Livia, Junior, Paulie representations.

it really feels like this should of been a series regardless how well it looked on the big screen.

I might need to stop and finish tomorrow. This is aimless and pandering and, frankly, very ugly to look at. What does the entire movie have this dark mask over it?

 

This is just about the same level of quality.

 

A literal tank stopped Dickie with a dead body in his front seat and they said “he’s white” and let him through? What the fuck was that, man

That scene on the beach looked especially like shit

 

Just left the theater. I didn’t hate it, but went in with incredibly low expectations, so I just found it kinda fun and chill. Also, was/am stoned for it.

 

Ya. Like, it’s not good. But I liked being back in that world and it was cool talking about the call backs and references with my dad.
